Five Grants for U.S. Libraries and Literacy Programming

The topic of literacy is one that resurfaces regularly due to its continued relevance in today’s world. Literacy is at the center of everything from education, employment, relationships, and finances to many other aspects of modern life. Most people define the word as being able to read and write, at least on a basic level. However, that definition may be shifting, as some also define it as the ability to understand and interpret language. Regardless of how it is interpreted, literacy is an issue that requires attention and action.

While the U.S. has a relatively high literacy rate, this can differ based on location and access to resources. New Hampshire has the highest literacy rate in the country at 94.2 percent, and California has the lowest rate at 76.9 percent. According to the Literacy Project Foundation, “45 million Americans are functionally illiterate and cannot read above a fifth-grade level.” In addition, only half of adults in the U.S. can read books written at an eighth-grade level.

Libraries are one resource that can help improve literacy. Research shows that having access to libraries and services provided (like computers and research capabilities) can be helpful in improving literacy rates. Libraries also offer reading programs that can help improve the reading level among participants. GrantWatch has a grant category specifically for Literacy and Libraries.
