HUD Awards Redevelopment Grant To City of Lebanon

Housing is an important issue, as affordable sustainable housing is something that people need all over the United States. This week The City of Lebanon has been awarded $250,000 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. These funds will be used in Lebanon will be used to rehabilitate six owner-inhabited homes as part of the HOME Investment Partnerships Program.

This award was part of a larger disbursement in which the state of Pennsylvania will utilize a larger $10 million-plus HOME disbursement to housing affordability initiatives in 17 Pennsylvania counties.

Here’s what Governor Tim Wolfe had to say about the grant award:

“Especially as Pennsylvanians continue to feel the financial impact of the COVID-19 public health crisis, ensuring that there are good housing options for those who need it is critical”

The federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program was founded for several crucial purposes according to the program’s website:

  • HOME’s flexibility empowers people and communities to design and implement strategies tailored to their own needs and priorities.
  • HOME’s emphasis on consolidated planning expands and strengthens partnerships among all levels of government and the private sector in the development of affordable housing.
  • HOME’s technical assistance activities and set-aside for qualified community-based nonprofit housing groups build the capacity of these partners.
  • HOME’s requirement that participating jurisdictions match 25 cents of every dollar in program funds mobilizes community resources in support of affordable housing

The Lebanon County Redevelopment Authority will be administering these grant funds to the six home-owners, with that authority’s program director saying that the city has operated this rehabilitation program and applies for funds every single year.

These grant awards are especially helpful in Lebanon where rehabilitations can actually increase the value of these homes, as well as helping the residents of these towns most of whom are low-moderate income.
