Today, GrantWatch is sharing the top grants for women from 15 of our categories to celebrate International Women’s Day. The global day takes place on March 8th. Not only is it a way to acknowledge women, but it is also a reminder of what still needs to be done. International Women’s Day was started in 1911 by Clara Zetkin, a German advocate for women’s rights.

A Look at the Issues Women Face

When it comes to gender equality, women have long gotten the short end of the stick. Even though there has been a lot of progress on this front, women are still fighting for equal rights. Whether it’s education, employment, health, sports or politics, women are often held to different standards. In many countries, women are even actively oppressed on an ongoing basis as a way to prevent them from gaining power. This could mean having laws that limit their freedoms or even issuing threats that spark fear in these women.

Women account for almost half the global population, with about 49% of the world being women. However, unless real change happens, women will continue facing issues their counterparts could never imagine. According to the UN Women’s website, “women make up more than two-thirds of the world’s 796 million illiterate people.” The organization also notes that an estimated 60 percent of hungry people are women and girls. The World Health Organization also estimates that one in three women will experience sexual or physical violence during their lifetime.

In order to change these statistics to benefit women, it is important to fund organizations that help. Although many organizations exist to improve the quality of life for women, they often don’t have the money to do as much as they would like. Grants are a great way to get additional funds for these groups.
