Six Grants for U.S. Municipalities and Local Government Agencies

Municipalities are corporate and political entities that operate within a specific geographic area for the well being of the public. Without these government agencies, citizens would be without crucial services.

GrantWatch has a category specifically for grants for municipalities. It also has a category for community services, as well as community/economic development.

Municipal governments oversee many departments that benefit citizens in their day-to-day lives. For example, these agencies include libraries, parks, public works, public schools, local police and emergency medical services, and transportation and parking.

According to data from the Congressional Budget Office, cities and states supply nearly 80 percent of the $441 billion spent on transportation and water infrastructure in the U.S. State and local governments also provide more than 90 percent of the funding for K–12 education.

However, since COVID-19, the Council on Foreign Relations, notes that many state and local governments are facing budget shortfalls. This lack of funding has led to many departments having to cut back on spending for infrastructure and education.

Grants however, can help provide funding for initiatives and programs that contribute to the well-being of these local departments. Below, are six grants that are currently available for municipalities and local government agencies.
