Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson<\/strong> was an American mathematician who worked for NASA for 35 years. Her calculations of\u00a0orbital mechanics<\/a> were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. Katherine Johnson mastered complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Johnson’s was responsible for calculating trajectories,\u00a0launch windows\u00a0and emergency return paths for\u00a0Project Mercury<\/a>\u00a0spaceflights, including those for astronauts\u00a0Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and\u00a0John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and rendezvous paths for the\u00a0Apollo\u00a0Lunar Module\u00a0and\u00a0command module\u00a0on flights to the Moon.\u00a0Her calculations were also essential to the beginning of the\u00a0Space Shuttle program, and she worked on plans for\u00a0a mission to Mars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Katherine Johnson is one of the first\u00a0African-American\u00a0women to work as a NASA scientist. <\/li>
  2. She was one of three black students to integrate West Virginia\u2019s graduate schools.<\/li>
  3. She graduated with B.S., Mathematics, and French from West Virginia State College in 1937.<\/li>
  4. Mrs. Johnson was a school teacher prior to working at West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics\u2019 (NACA\u2019s) Langley laboratory.<\/li>
  5. In 1957, she provided some of the math for the 1958 document\u00a0Notes on Space Technology, a compendium of a series of 1958 lectures given by engineers in the Flight Research Division and the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division (PARD).<\/li>
  6. Katherine Johnson worked on the Space Shuttle and the Earth Resources Satellite (later renamed Landsat)\u00a0and authored or co-authored 26 research reports.\u00a0 <\/li>
  7. In 2015, President\u00a0Barack Obama\u00a0awarded her the\u00a0Presidential Medal of Freedom<\/a>. <\/li>
  8. In 2019, Mrs. Johnson was awarded the\u00a0Congressional Gold Medal<\/a> <\/li>
  9. She was portrayed by\u00a0Taraji P. Henson<\/a>\u00a0as a lead character in the 2016 film\u00a0Hidden Figures<\/a>.<\/em> <\/li>
  10. She died on February 24, 2020. She was 101 years old. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
