Grants worth $7 million will provide 288 Pennsylvania elementary schools fresh fruits and vegetables to students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These funds come through the U.S Department of Agriculture&#8217;s Fruit and Vegetable Program.  The priority for this funding will go toward the schools that have the highest rates of students currently receiving free or reduced-price meals in schools. Schools often provide breakfast and lunch for eligible students. These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthaffairs.org\/doi\/10.1377\/hlthaff.2020.00133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">programs cut down on food insecurity, childhood obesity, and poor health<\/a> as do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/cat\/24\/nutrition-grants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">these<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GrantWatch<\/a>. The money is earmarked for buying fresh fruits and vegetables, developing partnerships and cutting costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Healthy, nutritious meals are essential to a child\u2019s growth and success,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.pa.gov\/pages\/Secretary-Biography.aspx#:~:text=Noe%20Ortega%20was%20nominated%20to,Department%20of%20Education%20(PDE).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Education Secretary Noe Ortega<\/a> said. \u201cThese fresh food grants will help ensure students have access to fresh produce that they may not be introduced to otherwise, while also supporting their physical and academic growth.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Giving Access To Fresh Fruits and Veggies Can Help Students <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The USDA&#8217;s nutrition program has a few key goals: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices<\/li><li>Expand the variety of fruits and vegetables students experience<\/li><li>Increase fruit and vegetable consumption, and positively impact students\u2019 present and future health<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The program started in the state of Pennsylvania and now exists in all 50 states. Through this program, schools need to provide proper nutrition education to students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The fresh fruit and vegetable program provides young students exposure to fresh fruits and vegetables that may otherwise\u00a0not\u00a0have the opportunity, and provides them a healthy snack at the same time,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapa.org\/Vonda-Cooke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vonda Cooke Ramp, Pennsylvania State Director of Child Nutrition Programs under the Division of Food and Nutrition,\u00a0M.S., R.D.<\/a> &#8220;We are delighted to provide this opportunity to the awarded schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A full list of schools awarded grant funds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.pa.gov\/Teachers%20-%20Administrators\/Food-Nutrition\/programs\/Pages\/FFVPAwarded2022.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can be found here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>GrantNews Notes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Providing meals to students, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/en\/blog\/2021\/03\/how-school-meals-help-families-impacted-by-the-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">especially during the pandemic<\/a>, was absolutely critical to combatting food insecurity.
