The grant will go toward developing an app called Vizling. After the app is official, it will help improve accessibility for visually impaired students to read comics and other forms of multimedia text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron Rodriguez, a Florida State University doctoral candidate, and Darren DeFrain, a Wichita State University professor, are the two recipients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NEH awarded 20 Digital Humanities Advancement grants, adding up to a total of $2.3 million. According to NEH, they chose projects that have successfully completed a start-up phase and demonstrated their value to the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wichita.edu\/about\/wsunews\/news\/2021\/08-aug\/vizling_3.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Andrew Hippsley<\/a>, the dean of Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said the app shows that even the field of humanities can contribute to technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDarren DeFrain is a risk-taker with entrepreneurial spirit who draws from his expertise to do something completely different in the world of apps,\u201d Hippsley said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/><a href=\"http:\/\/grantwatch.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GrantWatch<\/a> has similar grants of up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grant\/180412\/grants-to-nonprofits-in-multiple-usa-states-to-help-the-blind-and-visually-impaired.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$25,000<\/a> for U.S. nonprofits in multiple states working to assist the blind and visually impaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the App Will Do<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez started building the app back when he was in school to get his masters at Wichita State. It works by allowing a touch screen option for blind or visually impaired people to choose between three options: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>global narrative or audiobook, <\/li><li>narrative-grammar or panel-to-panel reading <\/li><li>free exploration mode<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The user can activate the <meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/>audio descriptions of each page&#8217;s by dragging a finger across the screen. They can then stop on a panel, a speech bubble, or an object on that page to hear the narrative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.fsu.edu\/news\/2021\/09\/01\/fsu-english-doctoral-candidate-receives-neh-grant-to-improve-visual-accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rodriguez<\/a> says that teachers are the main audience for this app, but individuals can benefit as well.
