The calendar began celebrating each state in the order they entered the union starting the week of Independence Day. North Carolina was the 12th state to join the union and is celebrated on Sept.28.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot of aspects to love about the Southern state, including the vast scenery. North Carolina has a little bit of everything. Not only is it home to beautiful beaches, but it also has breathtaking mountain views. The state also has a lot of history surrounding it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, in honor of National North Carolina Day, GrantWatch<\/a> is sharing some of its favorite grants below that are specifically for the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Carolina was the first state to vote for independence from Britain during the Continental Congress. The state is also known as “first in flight,” because in 1903, the state became the site of the first manned self-propelled airplane flight when the Wright brothers took off from a cliff near Kitty Hawk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state is even home to one of the most fascinating mysteries. A colony from Plymouth, England, settled to Roanoke Island in the late 1500s. But when the colony’s governor returned from a trip to England, the 150 settlers had just disappeared into thin air. The only trace of them was the word “Croatoan” scratched on a post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with these interesting facts about North Carolina, here are a few other facts<\/a> you might not know about the “Old North State.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten Interesting Facts about N.C.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  1. N.C. is the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola.<\/li>
  2. Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run in the state.<\/li>
  3. The state is home to the oldest public university in the United States.<\/li>
  4. The Venus Flytrap plant is native to N.C.<\/li>
  5. Fort Bragg has the largest military base in the U.S.<\/li>
  6. The state has its own House of Mugs.<\/li>
  7. Three presidents have come from N.C.<\/li>
  8. The largest mansion in America is in N.C..<\/li>
  9. The state is home to the oldest public university in the United States.<\/li>
  10. N.C. also has the largest natural habitat zoo in the world.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Five N.C. Specific Grants<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    1. Grants of up to $2,000 to North Carolina individual artists and groups<\/a> to engage in activities that will further their career development. Applications are welcome from artists who are residing in Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, and Randolph counties.<\/li>
    2. There are grants of up to $2,000 and in-kind support to North Carolina nonprofit arts and cultural organizations<\/a>, museums, libraries, and community venues to host a traveling exhibit related to the history of rural America. <\/li>
    3. And there are grants to Western North Carolina nonprofits and agencies <\/a>in eligible counties to protect water resources and habitats. <\/li>
    4. There is funding available to North Carolina Community Colleges<\/a> for training and workforce development. Funding is for proposals that focus on giving students hands-on experience and give businesses access to skilled workers.<\/li>
    5. Finally, there are grants of up to $10,000 available to North Carolina nonprofits and institutions<\/a> to host national and international meetings taking place within the state that relate to the life sciences and biotechnology.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
