The calendar began celebrating each state in the order they entered the union in 2017 starting the week of Independence Day. Alabama was the 22nd state to join the union and is celebrated on Dec.14.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, in honor of National Alabama Day, GrantWatch<\/a> is sharing some of its favorite grants below that are specifically for the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alabama is well-known for its southern hospitality, ethnic cuisine, and sweet tea. In addition, the state is also famous for college football. The Alabama Crimson Tide football program has won five of the last 11 national championships in college football. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state has many nicknames including the Yellowhammer State after the state bird, the Heart of Dixie, and the Cotton State. It is also one of the leading producers in iron and steel and even is home to the Iron & Steel Museum of Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with these interesting facts about Alabama for National Alabama Day, here are a few other facts<\/a> you might not know about the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 Fun Facts about the Heart of Dixie<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  1. The first rocket that allowed for humans to go to the moon was built at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. <\/li>
  2. In 1968, the first 911 call took place in Haleyville, Alabama. <\/li>
  3. Both Booker T Washington (Of the Tuskegee Institute), George Washington Carver (an American inventor), and Helen Keller (a disability activist) were all born in the state of Alabama. <\/li>
  4. The state constitution is the longest out of any other’s states.<\/li>
  5. The national flower for Alabama is Camellia<\/a>. <\/li>
  6. In addition, it was the first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday.<\/li>
  7. Windshield wipers were created in Alabama.<\/li>
  8. The American Civil War also started there.<\/li>
  9. Mardi Gras was first celebrated there.<\/li>
  10. Lastly, Alabama’s state insect is the Monarch butterfly, see the picture below ? <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Five Alabama-Specific Grants for National Alabama Day <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    1. Firstly, there are grants to Alabama municipal and county government agencies <\/a>for capital improvements to public infrastructure. Funding is for enhancements of public bridges and roads maintained and owned by the applicant. Funding may be used for eligible construction activities.<\/li>
    2. There are also grants of up to $2,500 to Alabama and Mississippi nonprofits <\/a>to strengthen communities within the funding source\u2019s service area. Funding is for programs in the areas of civic benefit, community and economic development, and education. <\/li>
    3. Financial assistance to Alabama IHE undergraduate and graduate students<\/a> for expenses associated with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Funding is to assist students who have urgent financial needs related to housing, food, educational costs, childcare, and healthcare. Applicants must have been an active University of Alabama at Birmingham student in fall 2020, spring 2021 or summer 2021.<\/li>
    4. In addition, there are grants available to Alabama nonprofits<\/a> for the marketing and promotion of tourism opportunities. <\/li>
    5. Finally, there are grants of up to $500 to Alabama teachers and other qualifying educators<\/a> to support agricultural education for K-12 students. Funding is available for classroom-level projects that effectively integrate agricultural concepts into the curriculum. Funds may go to equipment or supplies.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
