Through subspecialties like cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, or infectious disease, these doctors help millions of patients all over the United States and the world. This could mean treating chronic illnesses, like hypertension, diabetes, or chronic lung disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In honor of National Internal Medicine Day, which falls on Oct. 28, GrantWatch<\/a> is sharing five grants below that fund research in these specific areas of medicine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Are Internists Crucial to Healthcare? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Internal medicine physicians, or internists, specialize in the internal organs and systems of the body. However, some internists also offer preventive care and can act as general physicians. These physicians usually operate in an office setting and work with patients directly to help them manage care. These doctors are called general internists. Other internal medicine physicians operate in a subspecialty. This may require several more years of study, and they are still internists and specialists in their specific field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All internists undergo a four-year university degree program, medical school, and a three-year internal medicine residency. An internist who chooses to go into a subspecialty will have to undergo an additional 1-3 year training program in that specialty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internists are critical to healthcare, because their extensive training in the body and organs systems allows them to be able to have more experience in areas than general doctors. This experience allows them to make cutting-edge contributions to medicine that improve treatment and patient care. There are even some Noble Prize Laureates that are also internists<\/p>\n\n\n\n
