National Texas Day is celebrated on Feb. 1<\/em>, And Texas was the <\/em>28th state to join the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When thinking of Texas, one might picture hot weather, hot sauce, and the Dallas Cowboys. However, there is more to the state than meets the eye. Texas is the second-largest state in the U.S. following behind Alaska. In addition, Texas is the biggest producer of oil, natural gas, and sulfur. The state is also known as \u2018\u2019The Lone Star State,” signifying the time when it was an independent state, after fighting Mexico for its freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with these interesting facts about the state for National Texas Day, here are a few other facts you might not know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 Facts about the Lone Star State<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  1. Dr. Pepper was created there.<\/li>
  2. It is larger than any country in Western Europe.<\/li>
  3. Texas has the largest colony of bats in North America.<\/li>
  4. The state has around 120 tornadoes a year.<\/li>
  5. It also has its own power grid.<\/li>
  6. The state flower is the Bluebonnet.<\/li>
  7. Beyonc\u00e9 is from the state.<\/li>
  8. The state has the most cattle in the U.S.<\/li>
  9. In addition, the pecan tree is the state tree.<\/li>
  10. Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are three of the most populous U.S. cities.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Five Texas-Specific Grants<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    1. Firstly, there are grants to Texas nonprofit organizations<\/a> for a wide range of community benefit programs. Funding is to support programs and projects in the areas of healthcare, human services, and education that benefit disadvantaged communities. Preference will go to organizations that serve residents of Dallas and its surrounding communities.<\/li>
    2. There are also grants to Texas individual artists in eligible areas<\/a> to help with financial losses due to COVID-19 restrictions. Funding is to support local artists affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Priority will go to Funding Source’s members and to address food or housing insecurity. Eligible artists are those residing in Greater Austin.<\/li>
    3. In addition, there are grants to Texas arts organizations, institutions, arts providers, and cultural districts<\/a> for projects addressing a range of topics. Eligible activities address one of the following areas through the arts: education, natural resources and agriculture, health and human services, public safety and criminal justice, and economic development. <\/li>
    4. There is also funding of up to $75,000 to Texas nonprofits, tribes, IHEs, and agencies<\/a> for volunteer program development activities. Funding is to support organizations in the planning stages of programs that will place AmeriCorps members in positions of service.<\/li>
    5. Finally, there are grants to Texas volunteer fire departments<\/a> in rural locations to offset the cost of insurance policies covering members. Funding is to protect volunteers from unforeseen expenses.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
