National Canned Food Month takes place every February, and it’s a great time to talk about food insecurity. Food insecurity is an issue facing millions of Americans every day. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that more than 38 million people <\/a>in the nation are food insecure, including 12 million children. And since many families depend on food banks to meet their nutritional needs, it is important these families continue to have access to these services. In addition, many parts of the country have a hard time growing nutritious produce all year long. Specifically, in the cold month of February, lots of fruits and vegetables don’t grow, leading to a scarcity in supermarkets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GrantWatch <\/a>has a category specifically for nutrition<\/a> grants, as well as one for community services <\/a>and one for farming and agriculture<\/a>. These categories have many grants that can help with food insecurity by providing funding for projects directly helping the food insecure or paying for research to come up with long-term solutions. In honor of National Canned Food Month, GrantWatch is providing five of these grants below to help in the fight against food insecurity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can you celebrate National Canned Food Month as an individual? <\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n
  1. Donate:<\/strong> Clean out your shelves of canned food that’s still good and donate to your local food bank. <\/li>
  2. Have a cook off<\/strong> only using canned food. This can help to show the versatility of canned foods and keep costs low. It can also be a way to spend time with friends and family. <\/li>
  3. Create your own can<\/strong>! If you want to preserve food a little longer, you can create your own DIY can and keep food fresher longer. <\/li>
  4. Volunteer<\/strong> at your local soup kitchen or with a meals on wheels program near you. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Five Nutrition Grants<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n
    1. There are grants available to U.S. nonprofits<\/a> to promote nutritious eating and reduce food insecurity. The goal of the grant program is to improve availability and access to healthier food.<\/li>
    2. Opportunity for nonprofits and faith-based organizations<\/a> to receive donated food and other essential items to distribute within the community. <\/li>
    3. There are also grants to U.S. nonprofits<\/a> for community-based programs related to food and nutrition. Focus areas include food access, nutrition education, cooking skills, healthy and active lifestyles, and select urban agricultural programs.<\/li>
    4. In addition there is funding of up to $3,000 to K-12 schools<\/a> to supply meals for students during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Funding is to support the provision of equipment used in food preparation, sanitation and cleaning, transport and serving of food items, and cold storage of perishable food items. <\/li>
    5. Finally, there are grants to U.S. researchers<\/a> at qualified institutions for research projects related to food availability and sustainable agriculture.<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
