Many consider small businesses to be the backbone of the United States economy, and the numbers seem to back up this claim. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 59.9 million or 47.3 percent of all U.S. employees work for small businesses as of 2016. The administration also notes that 99.9 percent of all U.S. businesses are considered to be small businesses. That being said, while small business can be an umbrella term, there are businesses that we may consider to be even smaller. Mom and pop shops tend to be community-based businesses that give back to those around them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These businesses are ran by local community members and are often a more close-knit environment. For most of these businesses, customers become part of the family and are treated as such, receiving more individualized care compared to other chain businesses. On March 29, Americans everywhere celebrate these businesses as part of National Mom and Pop Owners Day. Specifically, the day serves to recognize the importance of local retailers and restaurants that serve their communities, as well as to encourage people to spend money at these particular places for the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially after COVID-19, many of these businesses have been struggling to keep their doors open because they do not have the support of being a big corporation. Instead of relying on money from higher-ups, these companies must find funding from other sources. Grants are a great way for mom and pop shops to find funding. For this reason, GrantWatch<\/a> will be sharing 10 small business grants today in honor of the special day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Ways to Celebrate National Mom and Pop Owners Day <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  1. Eat or shop at a local business in your community.<\/li>
  2. Buy a gift card to a local store or restaurant. Buying a gift card, or several, for friends and family can be a great way to support a local business. In fact, it can be a great way to spread the word. When you give a gift card to someone who’s never been there before, you may create a brand new customer. <\/li>
  3. Share about a local business on social media. Make sure to talk about your favorite products, services, or customer service that makes this business special. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    10<\/strong> Small Business Grants to Help Local Shops <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    1. Firstly, there are grants, investments, and in-kind resources for U.S. female entrepreneurs<\/a> to recognize outstanding business growth and impact on product markets.<\/li>
    2. Awards to U.S. small businesses<\/a> to recognize outstanding accomplishments in business and contributions to the prosperity of local communities.<\/li>
    3. Opportunity for U.S. small businesses<\/a> to receive interest-free loans of $2,000 and in-kind support. The purpose of this program is to provide support to businesses as they face the impact of COVID-19.<\/li>
    4. Grants of $5,000, grants of $10,000, and in-kind support to U.S. Black women entrepreneurs<\/a> to support equal opportunities in business. The purpose of this program is to support high-impact ideas and solutions and break down barriers caused by racial inequality. <\/li>
    5. Opportunity for U.S. small businesses<\/a> to participate in a mentorship program. The purpose of the opportunity is to help these small businesses increase their capacity, acquire development assistance, and compete for government contracts that would contribute to their growth.<\/li>
    6. In-kind grants valued at $5,000 to U.S., Canada, and International small business owners <\/a>for assistance in recovering lost revenue due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.<\/li>
    7. There are also grants of $10,000 and in-kind support to female-owned small businesses<\/a> in multiple countries to assist in recovery from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. <\/li>
    8. Additionally, there is funding of up to $50,000 to U.S. and Canada nonprofit organizations and businesses<\/a> to start or expand eligible recycling programs. Funding is for residential curbside recycling programs, convenience site or drop-off recycling programs, and operations of recycling facilities. <\/li>
    9. Cooperative agreements to U.S. and territories small businesses <\/a>for research and development projects related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).<\/li>
    10. Finally, there are grants to U.S. businesses<\/a> for assistance in business development. Eligible expenses for business needs include advertising and marketing, expanding facilities, and hiring employees. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
