{"id":237,"date":"2015-02-09T06:37:40","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T11:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grantnews.com\/?p=237"},"modified":"2025-10-29T16:49:50","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T20:49:50","slug":"what-is-an-loi-and-how-do-i-write-one-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/what-is-an-loi-and-how-do-i-write-one-2\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an LOI and How Do I Write One?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em; text-align: justify;\"><em>Dear Libby:<\/em><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"><em>I&#8217;ve been searching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/\">GrantWatch.com<\/a> for new grants and I keep seeing the term LOI with a grant deadline. \u00a0What exactly\u00a0is an LOI?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"><em>Regards,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A Subscriber in Boston<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"><br \/>\nDear Boston Subscriber:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">This is a great and important question as the pneumonic\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">LOI<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0has a few meanings in the grant giving world and appears in many of our grant postings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">LOI = Letter of Intent, Letter of Interest<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Often times a funding source wants a heads-up for how many organizations plan on applying for the grant or contract so that they can hire their review staff in advance of the grant deadline date.\u00a0LOI also places you on the mailing list for all future addendums and modifications to that particular application, including deadline changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">LOI = Letter of Inquiry \u2014<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Many funding sources require the submission of an initial, brief LOI rather than a full proposal.\u00a0 These letters are reviewed so that only projects of interest to the funding source are invited to submit a full proposal.\u00a0 Occasionally, a funding source will not publicize a proposal deadline until the LOIs have been submitted.\u00a0 In that case, our staff will list the LOI deadline on our site as the proposal due date until further information is provided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">On <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/\">GrantWatch.com<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">, when we list\u00a0an <\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">LOI<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0date at the top of a grant listing, it refers to a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"><u>mandatory LOI<\/u><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">. If the date has passed and you did not yet submit an LOI to the funding source, then, based on the rules of the funder, you can no longer apply.\u00a0 Those grants are archived on the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/\">GrantWatch.com<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> site.\u00a0 When you visit our <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/archive-grants.php\">Tour our Archives<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> page, you might find grants with a current deadline date but a passed LOI date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">The funding source usually provides an outline for the Letter of Inquiry.\u00a0 It is generally no more than two pages and contains: an introduction to your project, contact information at your agency, a description of your organization, a statement of need, your methodology, a brief discussion of other funding sources and a final summary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">I hope I have fully answered your question.
