{"id":28868,"date":"2023-06-19T11:35:08","date_gmt":"2023-06-19T15:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/?p=28868"},"modified":"2023-06-19T21:13:41","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T01:13:41","slug":"juneteenth-and-freedom-day-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/juneteenth-and-freedom-day-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Juneteenth and Freedom Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In honor of Juneteenth, we would like to highlight the importance of equality and the history of the day. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GrantWatch<\/a> has provided 10 grants that can help to support the African American community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Juneteenth?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is a significant day of celebration on June 19th in the United States. The day holds immense historical importance, as it marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans within the U.S. In addition to being a Federal holiday since 2021, there has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/09\/more-than-half-of-states-now-recognize-juneteenth-as-an-official-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase <\/a>in states recognizing the day as an official public holiday. Juneteenth also provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the struggles endured, the progress made and the ongoing fight for equality. It is a time to acknowledge our shared history, as well as celebrate the triumph of freedom and acknowledge the contributions of African Americans to the fabric of our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Early Days of the Holiday<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1980, Texas became the first state to make the holiday official, however, all across the United States, many people already had that view. In fact, Juneteenth has already been observed for more than one hundred years. For example, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.newspapers.com\/june-19-1865-the-first-juneteenth-celebration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earliest recorded commemorations<\/a> took place in 1872. At that time, <a href=\"https:\/\/epconservancy.org\/mission-core\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four members<\/a> African-American community in Houston purchased 10 acres of land to establish what we now know as Emancipation Park. Subsequently, this group intended to use the park for the city\u2019s first-ever Juneteenth celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10 Grants to Support the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) Community<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There are grants of <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/199922\/grants-to-usa-investigators-associated-with-ihes-for-new-projects-to-increase-the-diversity-of-online-resources.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to $25,000<\/a> available for investigators to increase the diversity of online resources. <\/li><li>Grants are available to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/204218\/grants-to-usa-minority-serving-ihes-to-advance-stem-research-and-education.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minority-serving IHEs<\/a>\u00a0(Institutions of Higher Education) to advance STEM research and education. <\/li><li>An opportunity is now open for women-led and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/205509\/opportunity-for-usa-and-canada-women-led-and-black-led-startups-to-participate-in-an-accelerator-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black-led startups<\/a>\u00a0to participate in an accelerator program.<\/li><li>Grants are available to <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/204146\/grants-to-usa-nonprofits-agencies-ihes-and-for-profits-for-research-projects-conducted-by-diverse-researchers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mental health-related<\/a> research projects conducted by diverse researchers.<\/li><li>Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBU) can apply for grants to <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/208951\/grants-to-usa-msis-hbcus-tccus-and-nonprofits-to-expand-and-enhance-the-education-workforce.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expand and enhance<\/a> the education workforce.\u00a0<\/li><li>Grants available to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/201002\/opportunity-for-usa-canada-and-international-black-medtech-startup-founders-to-participate-in-an-accelerator-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medtech startups<\/a>\u00a0led by Black founders to participate in an accelerator program.\u00a0<\/li><li>Nonprofits, for-profits, tribal organizations and IHEs can apply for grants for research related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/209293\/grant-to-a-usa-nonprofit-for-profit-ihe-or-tribe-for-research-related-to-the-homeownership-gap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">homeownership gap<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li><li>There are grants <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/194962\/grants-to-usa-nonprofits-to-benefit-diverse-communities-and-reduce-discrimination.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to $10,000<\/a> to nonprofits\u00a0to benefit diverse communities and reduce discrimination.\u00a0<\/li><li>Grants are available to nonprofits to <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/201347\/grants-to-usa-nonprofits-to-advance-diversity-in-the-fields-of-entrepreneurship-and-investments.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advance diversity<\/a> in the fields of entrepreneurship and investments. <\/li><li>An opportunity for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usa.grantwatch.com\/grant\/202479\/opportunity-for-usa-technologists-and-students-to-participate-in-a-social-justice-related-business-development-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technologists and students<\/a>\u00a0to participate in a social justice-related business development program. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if you are interested in similar grants, GrantWatch also features an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grants-filter.php?category_id%5B%5D=53\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entire category for BIPOC<\/a> grants.
