They are focusing on nonprofits that are struggling to provide food, shelter, and other aid to Americans coping with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/cat\/56\/coronavirus-covid-grants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic, while also helping those groups expand their payrolls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Senators are preparing a bill that will give the Treasury Department authority to distribute block grants to more than 1,000 state and local governments, which would in turn dispatch those grants to nonprofits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the grants are intended to help nonprofits with more than 500 employees, the Democrats\u2019 bill would also allow grants for nonprofits of any size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of the Klobuchar-Schatz bill <g class=\"gr_ gr_24 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"24\" data-gr-id=\"24\">are<\/g> as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Prevent nonprofits from having to lay off more of their own workers. <\/li><li>Cover wages of up to $50,000 for each nonprofit employee.<\/li><li>Help unemployed people match up with nonprofits in need of more workers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grantnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/nonprofit-1024x560.jpg\" alt=\"bill\" class=\"wp-image-3827\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nonprofit vs Small Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The coronavirus-response measures did not have adequate provisions for nonprofits with&nbsp;more than 500 employees. Instead, it focused on assisting small for-profit businesses. And since most nonprofits workers are considered &#8216;non-essential&#8217;, many are forced to close their doors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Habitat for Humanity had to lay off 10% of its U.S. paid workforce of over 600. They employ more than 500 workers, so they were not eligible for benefits provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantnews.com\/the-cares-act-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CARES<\/a> Act. The <em>yet-to-be-introduced<\/em> bill prepared by the 2 Senators would serve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Options for Nonprofits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grants and other charitable donations are the lifeblood of nonprofit organizations. But as we shelter in place, we are not donating like we once did.
