And, if you thought this was an issue reserved for the elderly, think again. Though it is MORE LIKELY to occur with people who are 65 and above, make no mistake about it: strokes can occur at ANY age! Stroke awareness &#8211; identifying the signs of stroke &#8211; and knowing what to do when someone is experiencing a stroke, is crucial to the potential life-saving response when this occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GrantWatch<\/a><\/strong> wants to do everything possible to help increase stroke awareness by providing a list of stroke-related grants and other funding opportunities. Beyond that, there are also countrywide, and even international, grants that are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some Fast Facts About Stroke Awareness<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stroke risk increases with age, but strokes can &#8211; and do &#8211; occur at any age&#8230;34% of people hospitalized for stroke are less than 65 years old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early action is important for stroke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2021, 1 in every 6 deaths from cardiovascular disease was due to stroke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Every 3 minutes and 14 seconds, someone dies of stroke. Every year, more than 795,000<strong> <\/strong>people in the United States have a stroke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stroke-related costs in the United S<strong>t<\/strong>ates came to nearly $56.5 billion between 2018 and 2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability&#8230;reduces mobility in more than half of stroke survivors age 65 and older. (cdc.gov, &#8220;<em>Stroke Facts<\/em>&#8220;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>During a stroke, every minute counts! Fast treatment can lessen the damage that stroke can cause. Here are some symptoms to look for: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8230;numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;trouble seeing in one or both eyes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;severe headache with no known cause. cdc.gov, &#8220;<em>Signs and Symptoms of Strokes<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Act F.A.S.T.<\/em> to Seek Emergency Help<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\">Act F.A.S.T. to help stroke patients get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/stroke\/treatment\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>treatment<\/strong><\/a> they need. If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T. and do the following test(s):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>F &#8211; Face:<\/strong> Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>A &#8211; Arms:<\/strong> Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>S &#8211; Speech:<\/strong> Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>T &#8211; Time:<\/strong> If you see any of these signs, call 9 &#8211; 1 &#8211; 1 right away.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\">***Note the time when any symptoms first appear. This information helps health care providers determine the best treatment. Do not drive to the hospital or let someone else drive you. Call 9 &#8211; 1 &#8211; 1 for an ambulance so that medical personnel can begin life-saving treatment on the way to the emergency room.
