On January 5, 2023, the Food Donation Improvement Act (FDIA) <\/strong><\/a>was signed into law. This bipartisan legislation will reduce food waste and improve food insecurity by encouraging new public and private partnerships by expanding liability protection for food donors. In truth, this legislation will reduce food waste significantly. Furthermore, these new partnerships will help to close the hunger gap in our nation. New pipelines connecting food sources within communities empower nonprofits to provide fresh, healthy, and locally sourced food for those in need. By reducing food waste, these partnerships will help improve food insecurity for American families!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Each year, millions of pounds of the nation\u2019s fresh food go to waste. Over\u00a0$400 billion<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is spent processing, transporting, storing, and disposing of food that is never eaten \u2013 even as at least 34 million Americans live in food-insecure households. This waste also has a toll on the environment as the natural resources to produce food that is wasted are, in turn, wasted as well. In addition, reducing and diverting organic food material from landfills can also reduce methane pollution, a powerful greenhouse gas. The law takes effect in phases: 1) wholesale food vendors, food service providers, and food distributors are already required to donate excess food; 2) restaurants, hotels, large venues, and state education facilities will be required to adopt programs to donate their excess food by 2024.”\u00a0(How the Food Donation Improvement Act Can Support Cities in Reducing Food Waste – National League of Cities)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

  7. Projects Serving the Local Community<\/a><\/strong> – Grants to nonprofits and government agencies fund things like food pantries, public school teams, fire department equipment, and senior citizens organizations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
