Unfortunately, the rate of diabetes in both adults and children is growing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 30 million people (1 in 10) with an additional 88 million suffering from pre-diabetes, adults are currently suffering from symptoms of diabetes, and it&#8217;s obvious that further intervention is needed. This is why it&#8217;s heartening to know that The University of Pittsburg has received a federal grant from the National Institutes For Health to researchers diabetes gene therapy.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/diabetes\">World Health Organization<\/a> defines Diabetes as <em>a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body&#8217;s systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Type One Diabetes: which requires daily administered insulin, and is characterized by insufficient insulin being produced by the body. As of now, the source of this type of diabetes is unknown, but can often show up in juveniles. <\/li><li>Type Two Diabetes is the most common and is characterized by the body resisting the effects of insulin \u2014 a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells \u2014 or doesn&#8217;t produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Institute For Health&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases<\/a> has awarded a $2.59 million grant to the director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pediatrics.pitt.edu\/centers-institutes\/richard-king-mellon-foundation-institute-pediatric-research\">Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research<\/a>\u00a0and co-scientific director at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pediatrics.pitt.edu\/about-us\/our-facilities\/upmc-childrens-hospital-pittsburgh\">UPMC Children&#8217;s Hospital of Pittsburgh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pediatrics.pitt.edu\/people\/george-k-gittes-md\">George Gittes, MD<\/a>. This grant will go towards the continuing development of gene therapy technology that is aimed at finding a cure for both Type One and Type Two diabetes, which could be life-changing for tens of millions of people, both in the United States and worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pexels-photo-2280549.jpeg\" alt=\"Diabetes\" class=\"wp-image-5956\" width=\"940\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pexels-photo-2280549.jpeg 1880w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pexels-photo-2280549-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pexels-photo-2280549-800x534.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pexels-photo-2280549-768x513.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pexels-photo-2280549-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Chokniti Khongchum on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/laboratory-test-tubes-2280549\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pexels.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This gene therapy technology was actually developed by Dr. Gittes and in its initial stages &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-stem-cell\/fulltext\/S1934-5909(17)30472-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>restored normal glucose levels in the blood of mice by reprogramming beta cells in the pancreas<\/em><\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Gittes spoke on this crucial grant award saying: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Diabetes gene therapy could eliminate the need for insulin replacement for people with diabetes and holds the potential to provide long-term effectiveness, or even be a cure for diabetic patients. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Gittes continued  on to say: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>This funding will continue to support our research in diabetic primates as we move toward human clinical trials, We saw encouraging data in our preclinical mice studies, where the gene therapy reprogrammed pancreatic cells to restore normal blood glucose levels in diabetic mice for approximately four months, which could translate to decades in humans.
