Lynn College of Nursing, Charles E. Schmidt College of Science have been jointly awarded a $2.4 million grant to train graduate students in data science technologies and applications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is interesting because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fau.edu\/newsdesk\/articles\/nsf-data-science.php#:~:text=Researchers%20from%20Florida%20Atlantic%20University,National%20Science%20Foundation%20to%20train\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data science and technologies <\/a>are a transdisciplinary area that encompasses computing, statistics, and various application domains including medicine, nursing, and business applications among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"353\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FAU-marksolo-800x353.png\" alt=\"FAU\" class=\"wp-image-6572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FAU-marksolo-800x353.png 800w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FAU-marksolo-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FAU-marksolo-768x338.png 768w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FAU-marksolo-1536x677.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FAU-marksolo.png 1890w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team will be led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.fau.edu\/directory\/faculty\/furht\/index.php\">Borko Furht<\/a>, Ph.D., principal investigator, a professor in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceecs.fau.edu\/\">Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science<\/a> who is also the director of the NSF Industry\/University Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Knowledge Enablement (CAKE), FAU\u2019s College of Engineering and Computer Science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furht says: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Effective data scientists need to be able to work in interdisciplinary teams and to use data visualization and communication skills to communicate their findings to individuals not trained in data science. Our program will produce graduates with technical depth and understanding of data science technologies and applications.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dean of FAU\u2019s College of Engineering and Computer Science, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.fau.edu\/directory\/faculty\/batalama\/\">Stella&nbsp;Batalama, Ph.D<\/a>. also spoke on this grant award and it&#8217;s importance, saying: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Big data and data science is a burgeoning field that requires a highly-skilled workforce representing many disciplines who are adept at gathering, interpreting,<em> and analyzing massive amounts of data, which lead to powerful new insight<\/em>s. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>30 faculty members from across these 5 FAU colleges will be participating in this program that will include the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Development of normalization courses <\/li><li>The creation of different testbeds for the various application domains<\/li><li>Boot-camps <\/li><li>In-depth elective courses<\/li><li>Professional workshops<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In total 45 people will be included in this program, 30 faculty members, and 15 masters students. The program also hopes to include an additional cohort that would include 10 to 12 Ph.D. students and 12 to 15 master\u2019s students each year, which will be supported by the various departments as
