Many of my favorite childhood memories are of going to the zoo or the park, or on fun field trips to museums. As a kid, I loved going to the petting zoo with my dad or my siblings and to this day still love to hang out with the baby goats. Being from New York, I loved going to museums and the theater with my mom and being exposed to all different sorts of art and culture. I loved going to the American Museum of Natural History<\/a> even when I was really young and it’s still one of the places I always visit when I go back home. Arts funding for museums and other attractions is so important as they enrich the lives of people of all ages. But now we’re seeing a lot of shuttered venues, and it’s hard to watch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shuttered Venues: They Desperately Need Funding To Survive <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For kids especially, these museums can be a major source of learning and education. But the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything, and many former tourist attractions and venues were really hit hard. This is why a bipartisan coalition pushed so hard to have arts funding<\/a> included in the last stimulus, to ensure that many of these places could receive funding to not have to close their doors forever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of these places depended on memberships, tourist visits, and foot traffic to stay open. Some hosted yearly fundraisers that had to be scuttled because of pandemic-related restrictions. Private donations did fuel some of these places, but for smaller museums these funds may have decreased because of hardships or other issues. Over 67% of U.S. museums have had to cut education programs as part of cost-cutting. A third of museums may have to close entirely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museums that were struggling included The Providence Children’s Museum<\/a>, the DuSable Museum of African American History<\/a>, and many others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a bipartisan coalition worked diligently to ensure that grants and funding were made available for cultural institutions through the Save Our Stages Act<\/a>, which was included in the latest round of stimulus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
