For victims of crime, in particular, victims of violent crimes and sexual assault, it’s important that they have access to services to help them. This is even more important in areas that have higher rates of violent crimes but limited access to victim services. Tribal communities, where women are much more likely to be the victims of violent crimes<\/a>, are in critical need of these services. Grants<\/a> are one way to fund programs to provide services to these unfortunate victims of crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michigan Awarded Grant to Improve Access to Services for Crime Victims <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A federal grant was awarded to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services<\/a> Division of Victim Services<\/a>. This grant will allow MDHHS and the state of Michigan to develop a roadmap to ensure that victims of crime have access to more services. This includes victims of sexual assault, stalking, and domestic violence to offer them more access to civil legal assistance. This grant will focus on those victims located in Michigan’s rural and tribal communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s what Debi Cain, executive director of the MDHHS Division of Victim Services had to say about this grant award: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProviding affordable, equitable, and accessible civil legal representation to all victims of crime is essential, and this project seeks to enhance these efforts for those living in rural and tribal communities. This multi-coalition partnership shows how important these efforts are to countless victims and their families, and we are grateful for this opportunity to work together on their behalf.\u201d &emdash; Debi Cain, MDHHS Division of Victim Services Executive Director.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

According to MDHHS, the Division of Victim Services has identified several gaps in services for tribal and rural victims over the span of several years. This project will evaluate current efforts and create a roadmap to increase access to legal services for the future. The MDHHS will partner with Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence<\/a>, as well as Michigan\u2019s tribal coalition, Uniting Three Fires Against Violence<\/a> on this project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
