One topic that we haven&#8217;t often discussed here is the importance of cybersecurity. National security is important on several levels, including online. And, protecting the government online is critically important. But citizens feeling safe online is important, too. And, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/cat\/36\/technology-grants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technology<\/a> increasingly is a central aspect of our life, cybersecurity and data policy are now a focus. And, this is on a local, state, and federal level. But what does this mean in practice? Cybersecurity education answers this important question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also why we&#8217;re starting to see cybersecurity as a policy issue. And, this is true not just in government but in corporations. And now, a $1.5 million grant award to Norwich University will focus on policy-related cybersecurity education. This will help students get real-world experience in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cybersecurity Policy Education Will Help Us Understand the Future <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant will go towards supporting ongoing work and research by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsa.gov\/resources\/students-educators\/centers-academic-excellence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) Program<\/a>. This program is a project of the National Security Agency, who awarded this grant to Norwich University for their current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QYo2aecWZsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Evidencing Competency Oversight Project<\/a>. This project supports the NCAE-C program. The NCAE-C program focuses on several key action-items including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Establishing standards for cybersecurity curriculum and academic excellence.<\/li><li>Competency development among students and faculty.<\/li><li>Valuing community outreach and leadership in professional development.\u00a0<\/li><li>Integrating cybersecurity practice within the institution across academic disciplines.<\/li><li>Active engagement in solutions to challenges facing cybersecurity education.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Students Will Gain Risk-Free Experience in Real Time <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pexels-dids-1546580-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9371\" width=\"461\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pexels-dids-1546580-2.jpg 626w, https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grantnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pexels-dids-1546580-2-256x240.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This cybersecurity program aims to improve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/opinion-giant-report-lays-anvil-on-us-cyber-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">current understanding of cybersecurity policy<\/a>, improve upon current education in this field, and build greater collaboration between the NCAE&#8217;s. Students in this program will one day work in this field, so this work is key. And also, cybersecurity itself is such a new concept that crafting good policy is important early on. The program aims to mainly focus on two areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Developing and facilitating 10 cybersecurity exercises.<\/li><li>Engaging students for skills competency development and measurement.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both will provide students with hands-on experience and alert them to the real-world dangers cyber attacks can pose. It will probably also be really fun! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of Preparing  Students For The Future <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let&#8217;s talk a bit about what this will look like and the importance of this award. First, these <strong>e<\/strong>xercises will be help students at Norwich by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Helping to improve skills in risk resiliency through opportunities to neutralize and understand common risks.<\/li><li>Strengthening students knowledge regarding crisis communications and incident response. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These exercises will be conducted using the Distributed\u00a0Environment for\u00a0Critical\u00a0Infrastructure\u00a0Decision-making\u00a0Exercises (DECIDE) program.  Interestingly, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/science-and-technology\">Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate<\/a>, under Homeland Security, created DECIDE<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/science-and-technology\">.<\/a> Specifically, DECIDE is software that greatly advances state-of-the-art critical infrastructure protection exercises. And, DECIDE started receiving DHS funding back in 2008. After all, the government benefits from knowing what dangers may be lurking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using DECIDE, this program will enable students to accomplish the above-mentioned goals. By simulating cyber attacks, kinetic events, and other disasters of natural or human origin, the program hopes to train students in coordinating critical responses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> Phil Susmann, NUARI President, spoke on the award: &#8220;Norwich was founded in 1819 under the principle of experiential education \u2013 learning by doing &#8211; by our founder Alden Partridge. Norwich&#8217;s core principles are still pertinent today; technical education must be bolstered by experiential education \u2013 evidencing competencies to demonstrate knowledge and understanding.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of such programs is critical as we grow even more connected every single day. The more virtually connected the world is, the more risk there may be of a potential cyber attack.
