I&#8217;ve stressed in previous articles the importance of funding research due to its connection with public health. Something we don&#8217;t understand nearly enough is Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. Alzheimer&#8217;s is a progressive type of dementia that affects behavior, thinking, and memory. It is the most common type of dementia and accounts for around 60-80% of cases. Since it&#8217;s progressive, symptoms worsen over time, eventually limiting a patient\u2019s ability to complete basic tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/10_signs\">According to the Alzheimer&#8217;s Association<\/a>, one of the most common early symptoms is forgetting newly learned information. While there&#8217;s no cure, early detection is critical to maintaining and treating symptoms like memory loss. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s great to hear that a research team out of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.fsu.edu\/news\/health-medicine\/2021\/04\/21\/fsu-researcher-awarded-2-2m-nih-grant-to-study-impact-of-alzheimers-disease-on-sleep-related-brain-function\/#:~:text=A%20Florida%20State%20University%20researcher,behavior%20in%20millions%20of%20Americans.\">Florida State University<\/a> has received a grant to study the impact of Alzheimer\u2019s disease on sleep-related brain function. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about medical research,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantwatch.com\/grant\/155209\/grants-to-usa-investigators-for-healthcare-related-research.html\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"> here&#8217;s a grant we have listed on Grantwatch for investigators for health related research. <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alzheimer\u2019s Disease And Brain Functions During Sleep <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is this so important? To begin with, Alzheimer\u2019s impacts countless Americans. <span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/aging\/aginginfo\/alzheimers.htm#:~:text=In%202020%2C%20an%20estimated%205.8,14%20million%20people%20by%202060.\">In 2020, over $5.8 million Americans<\/a><\/span> were diagnosed with the disease. According to the Centers For Disease Control &amp; Prevention, this number will triple to 14 million by the year 2060. And those are just the patients. Families and loved ones will struggle too. This grant, which was awarded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/\">NIH&#8217;s National Institute on Aging<\/a>, will work to help with early detection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So What Will The Research Consist Of? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This five-year grant funds research that looks at the relationship between spatial learning &amp; memory. They are some dynamics of brain function during sleep. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/referenceworkentry\/10.1007%2F978-3-540-29678-2_5548#:~:text=Spatial%20learning%20and%20memory%20refers,the%20neural%20basis%20of%20cognition.\">Spatial learning and memory refer to<\/a> &#8220;the set of behaviors and processes through which information about external environmental space is acquired, stored, organized, and used.&#8221; A research team, led by Assistant Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience Aaron Wilber, will use mouse models to examine this. They will examine these dynamics of the brain throughout the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Both of these brain regions are associated with spatial learning and memory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Here&#8217;s what Dr. Aaron Wilbur had to say about this research- &#8220;One reason Alzheimer\u2019s treatments have failed may be because it\u2019s difficult to catch the disease before the brain has become too dysfunctional to recover. This grant is focused on identifying early changes in the brain, and we hope that looking earlier in the disease progression will yield new insight into approaches for detecting and treating Alzheimer\u2019s disease. We are also looking at later timepoints since more is known about later brain changes in Alzheimer\u2019s disease.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is important is because a lot of memory processing happens during sleep. Memories are recalled much faster during sleep periods.
