Florida Gets Another $28 Million Federal Grant For COVID Disaster Relief

Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis recently announced an additional $28 million in funding for disaster relief employment for eligible Floridians in response to COVID-19. This federal Disaster Recovery Dislocated Worker Grant is administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and will provide disaster-relief employment in the form of temporary jobs, employment and training services, and supportive services to eligible Floridians.

Here’s some background on this specific kind of grant award:

DWGs provide resources to states and other eligible applicants to respond to large, unexpected layoff events causing significant job losses. This funding is intended to temporarily expand capacity to serve dislocated workers, including military service members, and meet the increased demand for WIOA employment and training services, with a purpose to reemploy laid-off workers and enhance their employability and earnings.”

So who will be eligible for this assistance?

Floridians who have been laid off due to the pandemic, who have lost work because of the pandemic, or those who have been experiencing long-term unemployment will be eligible for assistance.

What does this assistance comprise of?

Employment under this grant will include activities that focus on helping people in need. These activities will include:

  • Providing medicine, food, and other supplies to individuals in need
  • Assisting with setting up quarantine areas and providing assistance to quarantined individuals
  • working at food distribution centers
  • Cleaning sanitizing schools and quarantine areas
