Welcome to another episode of GrantTalk, hosted by Libby Hikind, founder and CEO of GrantWatch.com. Today’s conversation features Homer Lee Bizzle III, CEO of America Cares Too, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans through advocacy, food assistance, housing, and mental health services.
About Homer Lee Bizzle III and America Cares Too
Homer Lee Bizzle III is a disabled veteran who knows firsthand the struggles many service members face when returning home. After experiencing discrimination and hardship following his military service, Homer decided to take action. He founded America Cares Too, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping veterans overcome barriers related to food insecurity, housing, mental health, and employment.
Focused on Cook County and the greater Chicago metropolitan area, America Cares Too provides crucial services where they are most needed, extending their reach even to underserved neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago.
America Cares Too Success with GrantWatch
Homer has secured four grants through GrantWatch, totaling $32,500.24 this year alone, plus significant in-kind donations. These grants, combined with corporate donations and partnerships, have been vital in supporting his organization’s services.
Here’s a look at the grants awarded:
- Pillars of Giving: Funding for supplies, food cards, and advocacy education for veterans.
- Louder Than Words: $10,000 to help purchase a much-needed vehicle for program operations.
- Andrew and Alice Fischer Charitable Trust: $10,000 awarded to support veterans’ rights initiatives.
- CSX Corporation: $2,500 toward fighting food insecurity and addressing workplace challenges among homeless veterans.
How America Cares Too Helps Veterans
America Cares Too offers a range of services for veterans and their families:
- Food pantries and grocery card distribution.
- Housing referrals and assistance.
- Mental health referrals through the Department of Veteran Affairs Vet Centers.
- Support for VA claims and disability applications.
- Advocacy for veterans’ rights, especially regarding disability accommodations and mental health support.
By collaborating with organizations like the VA, Homer ensures that veterans not only find stability but also heal emotionally and mentally, giving them a true hand up instead of a handout.
A Needed Force in the Veteran Community
Homer’s organization has filled a vital gap where other veteran organizations often fall short. Without focusing on memberships, America Cares Too is solely mission-driven, providing direct assistance to veterans who otherwise might be overlooked.
The respect and gratitude he receives from the community show the deep impact of his work, empowering veterans to reclaim their lives and dignity.
