Community Fund Ohio: A Unique Foundation with a Purpose
Established in 1993, Community Fund Ohio, also known as Community Foundation Management Services of Ohio, was created to help individuals with disabilities retain their government benefits, like Medicaid and SSI, while also accessing vital support.
The organization manages pooled special needs trusts for people with disabilities. Interest from these trusts is partially allocated each year to fund grants for eligible individuals and nonprofits throughout Ohio.

Community Fund Ohio: A Model Worth Replicating
Community Fund Ohio’s individual grants are among the few of their kind in the nation. McGraw shares how the foundation is committed to expanding awareness, especially in underserved and rural areas of Ohio.
Libby points out that other states could learn from this model. It provides critical support without jeopardizing access to essential public assistance.
Simplified Application Process
Community Fund Ohio prioritizes ease and accessibility. Applications are short—about five pages—and require minimal documentation, such as a Medicaid card or a doctor’s note. Payments are made directly to providers to ensure the process remains stress-free for the applicant and compliant with benefit requirements.
McGraw emphasizes that the goal is to reduce stress and quickly deliver help to where it’s most needed.
Stories of Real-Life Impact
Grants from Community Fund Ohio have helped fund adaptive vehicles, vocational tools, and sensory-friendly environments. The foundation often serves as the funder of last resort, stepping in when no other options remain. Nonprofits supported by the program report back with photos, receipts, and impact summaries without burdensome reporting requirements.
A Lasting Commitment to Inclusion
Community Fund Ohio remains committed to helping Ohioans with disabilities access resources that improve their quality of life. By reducing barriers, streamlining the application process, and offering flexible funding, the foundation continues to be a lifeline for those who need it most.
