Affordable Housing Grants Are Available on GrantWatch
For those of you looking to rent or purchase a home this year, you may have faced some sticker shock. In addition to the skyrocketing price of eggs, rental and housing costs have gone through the roof in some areas of the country. As a result, affordable housing is an issue for many Americans.
You can substitute other food choices for eggs, but what can you substitute for a home? People with higher incomes have multiple choices; they can either stay put, move or downsize. However, for low-income workers, they may have little or no choice. GrantWatch’s headquarters is located in Florida, which has experienced some of the highest rental increases in the nation. Miami saw a 23.7% increase in 2022 over the previous year. Other Florida cities saw a similar rise in prices. According to CBS News, residential rental rates in Florida continue to rise even though they are dropping in some other states.
Housing Affordability
Lower rates in some areas can be good news. But it can still be a struggle if you are in one of the lower income brackets. According to The Council of State Governments, on average in the U.S., a person would need to earn over $25 an hour to afford a two-bedroom rental. But currently the federal minimum wage is only $7.25 an hour. Even though many states have a higher minimum wage, housing costs are still an issue for many lower-wage workers.
Since there is so little availability of affordable housing, it has left many “cost burdened” (30% or more of their income spent on housing). As a result, they don’t have enough left over for other necessities like food, car payments or utilities, Younger generations are living at home longer. Others are moving in with roommates or living in crowded conditions with extended family. Many without a safety net live in transitional housing, shelters, vehicles or on the street.
Luckily, there are organizations out there that are offering help. GrantWatch has grants available that can ease the burden of rising housing prices. We have categories that offer grants specifically for housing and to serve our country’s homeless population.
