Disaster Response Funding For Hurricane Helene and How to Help
Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in Florida on Thursday, began as a category four hurricane and became the most powerful on record to hit Florida’s Big Bend before moving north into Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Tennessee. The storm, which downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday, has led to severe flooding and mudslides. Although Helene has moved past North Carolina, its effects are still deeply felt across the region.
As of Tuesday, more than 600 people are unaccounted for following the storm and a death toll of over 200, while thousands of people are without power..
In response, critical supplies are beginning to reach the Western North Carolina communities most impacted by Hurricane Helene. Crews are working tirelessly to restore power, cell service, and repair roads. Essential items like food and water are being delivered to Asheville and airlifted by the North Carolina National Guard to various counties. Cellphone providers are swiftly addressing the damage and implementing temporary solutions.
A Federal Major Disaster Declaration has been issued, providing assistance for residents in affected counties, as well as public assistance to reimburse local governments, state agencies, and nonprofits for repairs to facilities and infrastructure. For more information about these resources, visit disasterassistance.gov or call the FEMA helpline at 1-800-621-3362.
