Special Education Grants, Focusing on Potential

As citizens of the United States, we all share a deeply instilled belief that we have the right to pursue a solid education. We’re proud of it and we put a lot of time and effort into school projects, learning initiatives, and making sure that there is always adequate access to learning. It stands to reason, of course, that this is also true for individuals with special capabilities and students with learning disabilities. There are teachers, administrators, and organizations who work patiently and diligently to help students with special abilities. These dedicated educators work to create a warm, inclusive environment that facilitates a positive learning environment. Of course, the biggest obstacle faced is always funding. This is why funding for programs that address this issue, as well as others impacting this community, is essential. Special education grants are one path to assisting in this mission.

GrantWatch cares deeply about this issue, which is why we’re sharing a list of key grants. These grants include prospective program funding opportunities from all over the country to be as inclusive as possible. We hope that this list helps nonprofits, teachers, and schools that do so much to help students with special abilities to thrive!

Some Background:

Every child in the United States is entitled to an education. While we firmly believe this sentiment, compulsory education laws did not extend to students with special abilities until the 1970s. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed “The Education for All Handicapped Children Act,” into law. In turn, it would eventually be renamed the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. The passage of this law was groundbreaking in terms of education provisions for children with disabilities. It mandated that public schools provide a free and appropriate education to those students. Furthermore, it also introduced the idea of an individualized education plan.

Subsequent laws increased access and resources. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 strengthened services and protected against discrimination. IDEA has also been re-authorized and expanded several times since its passage. These laws, in addition to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, provide discrimination protections to those students receiving federal funding. The laws mentioned are only federal. Several states have their own laws, programs, and protections for students with disabilities.

In summary, GrantWatch is committed to supporting educational initiatives for children and students with special abilities. That’s why we offer a curated list of key grants Special Education grants nationwide. We hope this resource proves valuable to those dedicated to helping students with special abilities thrive.
