Grants of approximately $500 are available to Boston community non-profits that organize and lead walking groups in Boston neighborhoods. The purpose of these grants is to encourage regular walking as part of a healthy lifestyle by promoting socially supported, fun, physical activities. Walking groups can also enhance the safety of neighborhoods and parks by increasing foot traffic and helping residents to know their neighbors.
Preference will be given to applications that propose to recruit low-income residents living with or at risk for chronic disease, and that link the walking groups to existing efforts to prevent violence, create peace, and/or enhance utilization of neighborhood parks.
Applicant organizations that work in multiple neighborhoods may submit one application that proposes to coordinate multiple walking groups, for up to $1,000.
