Grants of up to $10,000 to Alberta registered nonprofit charities, individuals, and organizations in eligible locations for activities to enhance the quality of life for local residents. Funding areas of interest include the environment, community support, and community wellbeing. Eligible applicants are located in Banff.

Town of Banff Community Grants provide support for Banff based non-profits and community groups that benefit Banff residents and enhance quality of life under three grant funding streams:

  • Municipal Community Wellbeing Grants:
    • For registered non-profit charities, societies or community groups in serving Banff.
    • Projects, programs, events, operating costs, equipment or start-up funds that benefit Banff residents and enhance their quality of life in accordance with the Town of Banff’s vision, goals, and strategic priorities.
    • Preference will be given to applications that:
      • Show evidence of need for service or project
      • Demonstrate number of local residents served
      • Have an established track record for project delivery
      • Present a well thought out and clear proposal
      • Show evidence of clear goals and expected outcomes
      • Show evidence of financial need for the project and any other sources of funding including in kind • Show uniqueness of service
      • Indicate involvement from other community partners
      • Fit with Banff Community Plan, FCSS Community Social Plan, and/or council priorities of Master Plan

  • FCSS Building Bridges Grants:
    • For local non-registered community groups and individual(s) who are eligible, that fit with the Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) funding agreement with the province and mission of strengthening the social well-being of individuals, families, and community.
    • Building Bridges Grants support projects that:
      • Enhance community connections
      • Relieve social isolation
      • Welcome and involve a diversity of people
      • Offer affordable opportunities and activities Demonstrate a grassroots, locally driven approach
      • Encourage individuals or groups to become more involved in their neighborhoods and community
      • Take people’s ideas into action
      • Create new opportunities- priority will be given to new projects.

  • Positive Environmental Impact Grants:
    • For registered non-profit charities, societies or community groups in serving Banff
    • Projects will demonstrate positive environmental impacts including reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and waste-to-landfill
    • Align with the goals articulated in Banff’s environmental master plan
    • Grants support projects that:
      • Result in the direct elimination or diversion of food waste
      • Result in the direct elimination of single-use items
      • Result in direct reductions to the consumption/purchase of other material goods in the community (i.e. sharing/lending services, upcycling projects)
      • Directly support a mode-shift to public transit or active transportation
      • Directly support enhanced diversion of wood waste for use as a space heating fuel
      • Directly support carbon sequestration through enhancement of the urban forest (tree-planting)
      • Enhance community connections
      • Welcome and involve a diversity of people
      • Demonstrate a grassroots, locally driven approach
      • Empower and/or build capacity so that other individuals or groups to take action on environmental issues
      • Take people’s ideas into action

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Municipal Community Wellbeing Grants: up to $10,000 per grant (Total grant money available is $10,000.)
- FCSS Building Bridges Grants: Typical grant size is between $100 and $2,000. (Total grant money available has increased from $6,000 to $11,000.)
- Positive Environmental Impact Grants: up to $10,000 per grant. (Total grant money available $20,000.)

Term of Contract:

Funded projects for 2022 must be delivered by September 1st, 2023.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Municipal Community Grant:
The organizations applying for funds must be:
- A registered not for profit that is organized and operated solely for social welfare, civic improvement, pleasure or recreation, or any other purpose except for profit
- Providing services to residents of the Town of Banff
- Able to provide proof of financial good standing

Building Bridges Grants:
Eligible applicants:
- Individuals
- Informal group of individuals or neighbors
- Non registered groups /community organizations
- Must be a resident of Banff or Lake Louise for a minimum of 6 months.

Environmental Impact Grants:
Eligible applicants:
- Individuals
- Informal group of individuals or neighbors
- Non-registered groups /community organizations
- Must be a resident of Banff for a minimum of 6 months.

Pre-Application Information:

The 2022 Community Grant applications will be received until Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 4 p.m.

Applications will be reviewed and adjudicated by the Community Grants Committee and recommended recipients and amounts will be forwarded to Banff Town Council for final approval in Fall of 2022.
