Grants of up to $1,000 to Virginia public schools, classrooms, and programs in eligible regions for field trips for children in grades 5 and 6 to a local park. Opportunities at the park include outdoor education, environmental education, and team building. Grant funds are intended for transportation costs and programming costs for the Environmental Education program, Team Development, and Zip Line Program at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park. Eligible counties and cities include the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, City of Fairfax, City of Falls Church, and Loudon County.
At the 60-element team development course, students will be presented with challenges ranging from simple to complex. Experienced staff facilitate group debriefs, highlighting relevant life lessons, like bullying.
Students overcome physical and personal obstacles on the zip line, combining trust, high adventure and the natural beauty of Northern Virginia.
In compliance with Virginia Standards of Learning, a two hour environmental education component is provided. This program introduces students to the diverse ecosystems that coexist with the world they know, leaving them with perspective and knowledge of their natural surroundings. Students will discover habitats of mid-Atlantic flora and fauna through hands-on exploration. Pick from watershed studies or ecology exploration curriculum for an eye-opening experience. Participation in the Environmental Education component is required to receive grant.
