Fellowships to graduate students at Israeli universities who are working for a PhD in Science, Education, Social Sciences, Humanities, or Architecture, or for their Masters in Architecture and Urban Planning. The program is intended to support the best and brightest researchers from Israel and abroad, who will use their training to become leaders in their respective fields. Students who wish to apply must be nominated by an accredited academic institution.

The goal of these Fellowships is to create a cadre of leading professionals and academics who will increase the pool of technological and scholarly human resources in Israel.  This network of leading professionals and academics will raise Israel's profile internationally and maintain strong links between Israel and the rest of the world. The program will accept nominations of PhD students who perform cutting edge science research, basic, interdisciplinary or applied. The research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following areas of study, broadly defined:

  • Exact / Natural Sciences: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine
  • Technology: Computer Science, Materials Science, Earth Sciences, Nanotechnology
  • Engineering: Electrical, Chemical, Biomedical, Mechanical, Aeronautical

Additional Income Policy:

  • The Azrieli Fellows Program is intended to enable students to focus solely on their research at the university. The Fellowships are intended for students who are not employed and do not receive any additional income from employment or living stipends.  
  • The Azrieli Foundation has no objection to the student's receipt of additional research grants provided they are intended to cover research expenses .  
  • The Azrieli Foundation has no objection to the student’s receipt of supplementary funding to the basic fellowship from the academic institution at which they are enrolled, in accordance with the amounts and policies set by that institution. 
  •  Regarding employment, the Program will make an exception when said employment is directly connected to the students' Masters or Doctoral training (that is, teaching, tutoring, or other research-related roles), for no more than four hours per week, subject to approval of the Foundation.

In addition to Fellowships in graduate studies, the Azrieli Fellows Program supports:   

  • Postdoctoral Fellowships at Israeli universities for Canadian citizens or  those who have completed their PhD degree at a Canadian university (guidelines are provided under separate cover).
  •  Faculty Fellowships for positions in Israeli academia (guidelines are provided under separate cover).

Term of Contract:

Commencement: The Fellowship will commence in October 2020 for all fields and degree levels.

Duration: The Fellowships at the PhD level (in all fields) will be up to three years. The Fellowships in the Architecture field at the Masters degree level will take place for a duration of one year, with the option to renew for up to one more year.

Extension Policy: Requests for extension of the fellowship beyond the granted fellowship period may be considered by the Foundation, in specific cases and based on strict criteria. For information, Fellows may turn to the Fellows program management.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Graduate students at Israeli universities, in the fields and at the degree levels outlined in the guidelines, are eligible to participate in the Azrieli Fellows Program. The Fellowships are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit and other exceptional personal achievements, without regard to race, religion, gender, ethnicity or age.

Candidates are assessed based on their past academic performance, as well as their potential to make cutting edge contributions to their respective fields. Aspects of personal merit and leadership abilities are also taken into consideration.

Candidates for the Education and Social Sciences Tracks who have submitted a research proposal to the university between February 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020 are eligible to apply. However, candidates whose proposals are still in the process of receiving approval will be considered, on condition that the proposal is approved by October 2020.

The academic institutions eligible to nominate candidates for the PhD Fellowships are:

5. Tel Aviv University
6. University of Haifa
7. Weizmann Institute of Science

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for receipt of university nominated and approved applications for candidates in the fields of Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities and Education is February 16, 2020. Candidates are advised to check with their academic institutions regarding internal deadlines for submission of application materials.

The Selection Committees will meet between March and May 2020. Candidates may be called upon to participate in an interview in mid-May 2020.
