Fellowships to Israel graduate students to pursue studies in a wide range of academic fields. Applicants must submit a preliminary application to their university prior to applying. The purpose of the program is to support the best and brightest researchers who will use their training to become leaders in their respective fields. Students who wish to apply must be nominated by an accredited academic institution.

In keeping with its core values, the Program nurtures interdisciplinary and cross-cultural exchange, leadership training, community engagement, professional mentorship, and a growing alumni network. Azrieli Fellows are a community of outstanding scientists and scholars who have the unique potential to perform groundbreaking research, alongside an intellectual curiosity that transcends their field of study.

By enabling multidisciplinary research and the cross-pollination of ideas, the Azrieli Fellows Program breaks down silos, encourages creative thinking, and drives out-of-the-box solutions to some of the world's most pressing issues. 

Candidates are assessed based on their past academic performance, as well as their potential to make cutting edge contributions to their respective fields. Aspects of personal merit and leadership abilities are also considered, without regard to race, religion, gender, ethnicity or age.

Number of Grants:

The Azrieli Fellows Program offers up to 25 fellowships every year, as follows: Sciences (PhD): 10; Education (PhD): 2; Social Sciences (PhD): 4; Humanities (PhD): 4; Architecture (PhD): 1; Architecture and Urban Planning (MA): 4.

Estimated Size of Grant:

For PhD students in Natural Sciences:
Basic Fellowship: 108,000 ILS
For conference travel and research expenses: Up to 20,000 ILS
Annual Total: Up to 128,000 ILS

For PhD students in Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Architecture:
Basic Fellowship: 108,000 ILS
For conference travel and research expenses: Up to 14,000 ILS
Annual Total: Up to 122,000 ILS

For MA Students in Architecture and Urban Planning:
Basic Fellowship: 72,000 ILS
For conference travel and research expenses: Up to 14,000 ILS
Annual Total: Up to 86,000 ILS

Term of Contract:

The Azrieli Fellowships commence October 2022.

Fellowships are offered for up to the number of years listed below; the fellowship duration may change in accordance with university bylaws and procedures.

- Natural Sciences (PhD): 3 years
- Education (PhD): 3 years
- Social Sciences (PhD): 3 years
- Humanities (PhD): 3 years
- Architecture (PhD): 3 years
- Architecture & Urban Planning (MA): 1+1 years

The Foundation may consider requests for extension of an Azrieli Fellowship beyond the granted period. For information, Fellows may turn to the Fellows Program management.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Graduate students at Israeli universities, in the fields and at the degree levels outlined in the guidelines, are eligible to apply to the Azrieli Fellows Program. Applicants must be nominated by one of the following accredited academic institutions:

1. Bar-Ilan University
2. Ben-Gurion University
3. Hebrew University of Jerusalem
4. Reichman University
5. Technion-Israel Institute of Technology
6. Tel Aviv University
7. University of Haifa
8. Weizmann Institute of Science

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for receipt of university nominated and approved applications by the Azrieli Foundation is February 10, 2022.

The selection process will take place between mid-February – Mid-April 2022. Candidates may be called upon to participate in an interview in early-April 2022.

Winners to be announced May 2022.

*Candidates will be required by their academic institution to submit their applications internally (within the university) earlier than the above-mentioned date. Candidates are advised to check with their academic institutions regarding internal deadlines for submission of application materials.
