Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $7,500 to Ontario formal and informal neighborhood groups for resident-led projects that build local communities. Funding may be used for capital costs and one-time events that benefit local neighborhoods. Funding is intended to support residents' efforts to make community-building come to life in Waterloo.

All projects should be run by and for City of Waterloo residents. Projects should be open to anyone interested in the neighborhood. Your neighborhood could include formal association boundaries, a city block, a certain street, an apartment building, a condo, or all houses surrounding a local park.

Examples of community spaces:

  • City-owned land, such as parks, green space or recreation facilities
  • The common area in a condo building
  • Open spaces made available at a local business
  • Greenspace of an apartment building
  • Public pools or splash pads

Groups can apply for up to $7,500 in matched funds.

Project must be completed in one year of application the funding.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility requirements are any two or more neighbours with a great idea. This includes:
-Residents who live in a neighbourhood who are interested in working together on a project
-Groups of neighbours
-Formal neighbourhood associations and homes associations
-Groups of temporary residents (e.g. post-secondary students) living in the same neighbourhood
-Religious organizations if they can demonstrate support from the surrounding neighbourhood and the initiative is not religious in nature

Groups that are not eligible:
-An individual
-Groups previously awarded a NMF grant that have not completed the project or have not submitted their project summary report
-Political organizations
-Government organizations
-For-profit businesses
-Educational institutions
-Religious organizations that have not demonstrated support from the surrounding neighbourhood and/or the initiative is religious in nature
-Not-for-profits and registered charities not neighbourhood-based

Projects that are not eligible:
-Ongoing operating funding
-Conflict with existing City of Waterloo, Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation or United Way Water Region Communities policy
-Items already purchased

Pre-Application Information:

Due to COVID-19, round 2 grant applications will be limited to time sensitive projects (e.g. any continued playground construction) and projects that follow public health guidelines (e.g. online connections, contact free ideas). Eligible grants will still be reviewed following the June 3 deadline, but also accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis until September 1. Applications received after September 1 will be consider for the October deadline.

The 2020 grant deadlines are February 21, anytime between June 3 to September 1, and October 21.

Applications must be submitted before 2:00 p.m.

All applicants will hear about funding decisions approximately 4-6 weeks after the submission deadline.

The funding request must be matched. This means for every $1 you request you must contribute $1 in volunteer labour, donated services/materials or cash.
