Award to an Iowa teacher to recognize excellence and outstanding contributions to the field of education. The purpose of the program is to acknowledge exceptional educators who encourage student achievement and who are highly regarded by both colleagues and pupils. Eligible awardees must hold a valid Iowa teaching license and be employed by a public school district in Iowa.

The Iowa Teacher of the Year (TOY) Award provides an opportunity to recognize an Iowa teacher who motivates, challenges, and inspires excellence; who is respected by students and peers; who is a dedicated professional that helps nurture hidden talents and abilities; who is a creative, caring individual; who takes teaching beyond textbooks and blackboards; and who is an exceptional teacher helping to redefine American education.

The Iowa Teacher of the Year may serve as the Iowa Ambassador to Education, acting as an education liaison to primary and secondary schools in the state.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Nominees for IATOY must hold a valid Iowa teaching license and be employed by a public school district in Iowa.

Anyone, including school administrators, colleagues, students, parents, college faculty, and associations may nominate teachers for the award.

Pre-Application Information:

Nomination form must be emailed/mailed to the DE office and postmarked by April 1, 2021.

Nominees will be notified upon receipt of this nomination form and after the April 1 deadline. Once the nomination is accepted, an application packet will be sent to the nominee to be completed submitted by the stated application deadline.
