Grant Description
Grants of up to $2,500 to British Columbia nonprofit societies and charities, community organizations, groups, and individuals for events and festivals that promote tourism in eligible regions. Funding is intended to enhance visitors' experiences, encourage return trips, extend the length of stay, and increase off-season visitation. Events must take place in the District of Tofino.

Tofino’s festivals and events have become an important part of Tofino’s unique cultural identity. Tofino’s vibrant event scene reflects the community’s authenticity and resonates deeply with the guests who choose to visit here. To continue to support the diverse collection of festivals and help support new and emerging festival, the District of Tofino Council will make funds available to eligible applicants in 2023 for proposals that meet the goals of the Tofino Resort Development Strategy and values of the Arts, Culture and Heritage Action Plan. 

The Tofino Resort Development Strategy goals include:

  • Goal #1: Enhance tourism in such a way that it aligns with resident, community and regional values.
  • Goal #2: Strengthen recognition of and partnerships with Indigenous Nations in whose traditional territories the funding source operates. 
  • Goal #3: Increase sustainable and responsible tourism practices that minimize climate impacts on infrastructure, programs, and projects.
  • Goal #4: Increase awareness of Tofino’s west coast cultures and eclectic community character.
  • Goal #5: Enhance visitors’ experience, satisfaction and safety as they are interacting with the natural environment.
  • Goal #6: Build local tourism assets that increase accessibility and promote physical activity. 

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Action Plan values include:

  • Sustainable - Strives to create sustainability through their proposed project or program
  • Authentic - Reflects the community’s authenticity and eclectic nature
  • Fun - The project or program being proposed is based in the spirit of fun and openness. 
  • Creative/Innovative - The proposed project or program offers creative or innovative ideas that contribute to a more vibrant artistic and culturally engaged community.
  • Inclusive/Collaborative - The proposed project or program promotes or moves forward the practices of inclusion and diversity through collaborative means

Expenses that relate to the production and hosting of events in Tofino, and the surrounding region, are considered eligible expenses. Eligible Use of Funds:

  • Production expenses related to hosting an event such as venue rentals, audio/lighting equipment rentals, volunteer appreciation expenses, supplies/materials, etc.
  • Event Coordination Fees

Additional Eligibility Criteria
A registered non-profit organization or charity may apply for up to a maximum of two different events per year should they wish to partner and support an individual producer or small community group with their event proposal.

Eligible applicants include:
- Organizations registered and in good standing as a non-profit society or charity in the Province of British Columbia.
- Community organizations or individuals delivering a festival or event whose goal is collective, public or social in nature, and that can demonstrate fiscal responsibility for the project and have a proven track record of producing events for at least 2 years.
- Individual producers or small groups supported by a registered non-profit or charitable organizations.

Ineligible Use of Funds:
- Activities taking place prior funds being awarded by Council
- Activities happening outside of Tofino and the surrounding region.
- Core Organizational Expenses not related to the event
- Marketing Expenses
- Capital Expenses
- Commercial/For-profit Oriented Activities

Pre-Application Information
Application will be made available thirty (30) days in advance of the application deadline. The application deadline will be November 30, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.

There will be one intake per annum. Should there be funds in excess of $2,000 not used or requested through the granting process, funds may, at Council’s discretion, be made available through a second call for applications within 6 months.

A peer-review of applications will be held within 6 weeks of the closing date. Upon completion of the grant application evaluation, the EACH Committee will make a recommendation to Council in how the funds should be awarded. The recommendation will be brought forward to the next available regular Council meeting for consideration and approval. Applicants should be notified of funding decisions no later than mid-February 2023.
