Grants of up to €70,000 to Ireland arts organizations and professional practitioners in the field of opera for the development and/or presentation of new work on a small scale. Applicants are advised to register online with the funding source well in advance of the deadline to ensure application access.

Priority will be given to proposals that involve the presentation of new opera, focus on presenting opera within new contexts to new audiences or otherwise expand the avenues through which opera reaches people, and demonstrate high artistic quality and an imaginative approach.

Strand 1: Opera Development - Up to €20,000

The purpose of the Opera Development strand is to facilitate the development of ideas for new work in a collaborative context. The emphasis of this strand of the award is on innovation and experimentation. It is intended to support artists and creative teams to develop new ideas over time without the requirement to formally present the outcome of their work to audiences.

Priority will be given to proposals that:
-Focus on developing new ideas through innovation and experimentation
-Demonstrate a focus on various types of collaboration
-Deliver significant development opportunities to practitioners
-Provide evidence that the proposal is of a high artistic quality. The track record of the key artists will be taken into account.

Strand 2: Opera Presentation - Up to €70,000

The purpose of the Opera Presentation strand is to facilitate the presentation of new, innovative and experimental work created in a collaborative context, and that that offers unique or distinctive operatic experiences to practitioners and to audiences.

Applicants under the Opera Presentation strand must be able to clearly demonstrate that the project is feasible on the basis of a commitment from an experienced producer – such as a producing company, a theater/venue, an established festival and/or other arts organization.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Opera Development - Up to €20,000; Opera Presentation - Up to €70,000.

Term of Contract:

The award is intended to support the making and presentation of opera productions during 2015, commencing on or after January 1, 2015.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply applicants must be resident in (the Republic of) Ireland. There are certain exceptions where the Arts Council may deem eligible applications made by those based outside (the Republic of) Ireland. However, before admitting as eligible any such application, the Arts Council would need to be satisfied that the outcomes of any such proposal would benefit the arts in (the Republic of) Ireland.

While grant-aided organizations (RFO/AF/APG) are not eligible to apply, it is expected that funded organizations with the capacity to present opera as part of a wider program (e.g. opera companies, venues and festivals) will play a role in supporting or partnering with applicants for the Presentation strand of the award (and may play a role in the Development strand). In such instances the applicant must demonstrate that the support offered and the proposed role of the funded organization is additional to and separate from the activities for which that organization has received core funding.

Not Eligible:
-Organizations in receipt of funding under any of the main Arts Council grant programs (Regularly Funded organizations, Annual Funding, Annual Programming Grant).
-Individuals or organizations who do not have a demonstrable track-record as professional artists/organizations.
-Individuals currently in undergraduate or postgraduate education.

Not Funded:
-Major capital purchases.
-Ongoing core costs.
-Activities or costs that do not fit the purpose of the award.
-Activities which are more suited to another award funded by the Arts Council or operated by other State agencies such as Culture Ireland.
-Activities that have already taken place or which will have commenced before a decision is made on your application.
-Activities undertaken for charity fund-raising purposes, for participation in a competition, or for primarily profit-making purposes.
-Activities that have already been assessed by the Arts Council, except in cases where the Council has specifically advised you to redirect your application to this award. Please bear in mind, however, that you should not regard such advice as an indication of likely success in your application.
-Projects that solely involve the touring of existing productions.

Pre-Application Information:

You may not apply for more than one project award in any artform/arts practice area in any one round of funding. For example, this means that the same applicant cannot apply for an Opera Project Award and a Theatre Project Award in the same round.

All applications must be made through the online services website starting July 29 through the deadline. You will be able to upload a wide range of support materials in electronic format along with your application form.

You must be registered with the online services website to make an application. Applicants who are not already registered are advised to register for online services as far in advance of the deadline as possible, as it may take five days for your online services registration to be processed.

The online application will be open from June 29 through the deadline. Access the online application system here:

If you need technical support while making an online application, you can contact the Arts Council by emailing or by phoning 01 6180200 and providing a contact number. Applicants are advised to report any technical issues well in advance of the deadline.

Please note that there is often a high volume of calls as the deadline approaches and technical support calls received after 2:30 PM on the closing date may not be resolved before the deadline.
