Grants of up to $10,000 to California nonprofit organizations in eligible counties that serve disadvantaged children from birth to 18 years of age. Interested applicants must first submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full application. Eligible counties include Alameda and Contra Costa.

Grant decisions are guided by the Foundation's mission to improve the lives of children in their community. CSL’s goals are to keep children safe, support their families, enhance their intellectual, emotional and physical well-being, and enrich their lives.

The funding source is especially looking for ways in which an organization can use its flexible funds to make an important difference in their ability to fulfill their mission.  CSL may fund programs or portions of programs not covered by other funders, or in some instances,  specific administrative or one-time costs if the need is compelling.

Examples of programs:

  • After School Support
  • Children with Special Physical Needs
  • Counseling
  • Food/Hunger/Nutrition
  • Foster/Adopted Children
  • Health Services
  • Homelessness
  • Life Skills
  • Recreation
  • Victims of Abuse, Violence
  • Otherwise Disadvantaged

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grant awards typically range in size from $3,000 to $10,000.

Term of Contract:

Please note that grant funds are to be used during the twelve-month (July to June) period immediately following award.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

CSL welcomes LOIs from non-profit organizations serving children in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

In both the Letter of Interest and the full application, the Foundation pays close attention to a 501(c)(3) non-profit or government agency’s self-sufficiency, potential access to other sources of funding, size of population served, relative importance of the social need that the organization addresses, and impact on children served.

The Foundation does not fund agencies that promote political or religious views and interests. CSL does not promise ongoing support to programs previously funded.

Pre-Application Information:

The Foundation grant application is by invitation only. The LOI must be received by e-mail no later than February 15. Letters of Interest received after the due date will be considered for the subsequent funding cycle.

Grant applications are due by April 30.

Grant applicants will be notified of CSL’s awards decision by late June. Awards will be mailed to grant recipients at the same time.

Please contact CSL with questions about the application process.
