National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)
Grants of up to $10,000 to USA nonprofits for projects that address historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Applicants must gain the sponsorship of a local or state funding source chapter prior to submitting an application. Possible projects in each of these categories may include the following:
-Restoration of historic buildings or sites
-Preservation of documents or records, including cataloging and digitalization
-Conservation of cemetery monuments or gravesites
-Erection of historic site markers
-Interpretive display panels
-Children's mentoring programs and teachers' aids
-Donation of books or resource materials for tutoring or literacy programs
-English language tutoring
-Programs supporting veterans' medical centers or health providers
-Oral histories of active military or veterans
-Flagpole installations to fly the American flag at national sites
-Erection of veterans' monuments

Grants of $1,000 - $2,000 are encouraged, with a maximum amount of $10,000.
Projects must be completed within one year of initial grant funding (official grant year is July 1 - June 30). A grant project may not be started before notification by the committee national chair to the applicant of the success of the award (May 1 of the year following the year during which the application was submitted).
Only 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations may apply for a DAR grant. Grant applications from private foundations are not accepted.
Grant funding will be awarded to a successful applicant only once during a DAR administration. Entities awarded a Special Projects Grant during one administration must wait until the next DAR administration (e.g., July 2019–June 2022) before applying for another grant for another project or a different phase of the same project.
Examples of activities not eligible for grant funding include: administrative expenses, operating expenses (rent, salaries, benefits, utilities, printing, etc.,), surveys, permits, drawings, travel (mileage, lodging, meals, site rental,) food or beverages, vehicles, fundraising, conferences, events, reenactments, productions or performances, trips, camps, workshops, or politically motivated activities.
Completed applications must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2017.
Applicants are required to match the grant award 1:1 in order to allow for broader distribution of funds. Matching funds are not required to originate with the organization applying for the grant, but may originate with multiple donors or completed fundraising.
Secured funding for the entire project, less the amount requested by this grant application, is required to assure DAR of completion of the total project.
A Special Projects Grant application must be accompanied by a letter of sponsorship from a DAR chapter or state society. A grant applicant may contact the national chair by email to locate a DAR chapter or state society.
Grant Application, Processing, Awarding and Payment Time Frame
- December 31: Deadline by which grant proposals must be postmarked and mailed to the national chair
- April: Grant approvals are made by the NSDAR Executive Committee
- May 1: Grant Agreement Form will accompany notification to successful applicants
- May 1-21: Grantees return to the national chair two signed copies of the Grant Agreement Form with documentation verifying secured funds for completion of project, less the amount of the grant award. The Grant Agreement Form outlines details governing the grant. The sponsoring NSDAR chapter or state organization will be notified by the national chair of the approved grant to enable the sponsor to begin work with the entity regarding NSDAR's participation in the project.
- June 1: The Grants Awarded List is posted on the NSDAR Public and Members website committee pages following the national chair's receipt of the signed Grant Agreement Forms from all grantees.
- No later than July 1: Upon approval by the NSDAR Treasurer General, the first payment of one half of the approved grant funds will occur within six weeks following receipt by the national chair of the signed Grant Agreement Forms, signed by the entity's principal officer. The remaining funds will be distributed after submission of the final report following completion of the project, or phase of a larger project.
