Awards of $25,000 to USA public school teachers to recognize exceptionally effective teaching in high-poverty schools. Individuals may wish to submit an application or nomination by the November 25 early application deadline. In addition to the cash award, which may be used at the recipient's discretion, winners will participate in an intensive summer residency.

During the summer residency teachers will during reflect deeply on their classroom practice, explore the larger issues that shape their profession, and write a short paper on their teaching practices to share with other educators and leaders worldwide. The residency allows the winners to share their expertise with educators across the country without taking time away from the classrooms where they do their best work.

Up to five prize winners will be selected. Finalists who do not win the Fishman Prize will receive $1,000 each and national recognition.

All applicants who submit by one of the early deadlines will receive advancement notifications before later applicants.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the Fishman Prize, an applicant must:
-Be a current, full-time teacher who is responsible for teaching and assessing at least one class of students for a full school year;
-Teach at a public school (including charter schools); and
-Teach at a school where at least 40% of all students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

In addition to meeting the above eligibility requirements, successful candidates must demonstrate:
-An extraordinary ability to lead students from all backgrounds to academic excellence;
-A keen understanding of effective instructional practice and an ability to articulate it clearly; and
-A passion for teaching and a deep commitment to advancing the teaching profession.

Applicants do not need to be nominated to be eligible to apply.

Application Process:

Step I: Submit your online application. To get started, complete the online application, including basic background information and responses to two short essay questions. Before you begin, it is strongly recommend that you read Languages for Learning, along with the other collections of essays from previous Fishman Prize winners. Is it also suggested that you take a few days to work through the application to ensure your submission is complete by the final deadline.

Step II: If invited to the Honor Roll, submit videotaped teaching sample and reference form. Selected applicants will be asked to submit a teaching video and reference form from either their current principal or another school leader who can offer perspective on their success in the classroom. Guidelines on how to create and upload the videos will be provided. Semi-Finalists will be notified by early March 2015.

Step III: If invited, participate as a Semi-Finalist in an unannounced classroom visit by TNTP. Selected applicants will be asked to allow a TNTP staff member to conduct an in-person visit to their classroom for a single observation within a 2- to 3-week period. Finalists will be notified by mid-April 2015.

Step IV: If invited, attend an in-person interview for Finalists. A small group of finalists will be invited to an in-person interview event with a panel of judges. The interviews will take place in New York City. TNTP will cover travel costs and associated expenses. The judges will select up to five winners. Winners will be announced by end of May 2015.
