Fellowships to USA, Canada, and International scholars to carry out research on modern Jewish history in New York City or Jerusalem. Applications are invited from deserving scholars who are currently engaged in post-doctoral, graduate-level, or independent study. Applications will be considered for the following fellowship awards:

The Fred and Ellen Lewis Fellowship:

Description of the Fellowship: The Fred and Ellen Lewis/ JDC Archives Fellowship was established in 2011 with a generous gift to the JDC Archives from the estate of Ellen Lewis, a longtime JDC employee who worked for JDC from 1947 – 1985.

Fellowships will be awarded each year to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives facility in New York or Jerusalem.

The Ruth and David Musher Fellowship:

The Ruth and David Musher/JDC Archives Fellowship, was established in 2014 with a generous gift from Ruth and David Musher, supporters of JDC who have deep roots in the American Jewish Community, as well as a long time commitment to Jewish education and academic research and scholarship.

Fellowships will be awarded each year to a deserving scholar engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives facility in New York or Jerusalem.

The Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin Fellowship:

The Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin/JDC Archives Fellowship was established in 2015 with a generous gift from Dr. Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin, supporters of JDC who have deep roots in the field of higher education, as well as a long time commitment to academic research and scholarship.

The Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin Fellowship will be awarded each year to a deserving scholar engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives.

The Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin Fellowship:

The Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin/JDC Archives Fellowship was established in 2017 with a generous gift from Dr. Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin to honor Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin, the parents of Sorrell Chesin.

The fellowship will be awarded each year to a deserving scholar from outside the United States engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives.

The JDC Archives Regional Fellowship:

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is pleased to present a JDC Archives Regional Fellowship for regional research focused on Israel and North African Jewish communities. This fellowship was established in 2017, sponsored by Ruth and David Musher, supporters of JDC, who have deep roots in the American Jewish community and a long time commitment to Jewish education, academic research and scholarship.

The JDC Archives Regional Fellowships will be granted to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives on the following topics:
-JDC’s work in Israel and the Yishuv
-JDC’s work in the Jewish communities of North Africa

Number of Grants:

Five (5) or six (6) fellowships will be awarded each year: One (1) or two (2) The Fred and Ellen Lewis Fellowship will be awarded each year; One (1) The Ruth and David Musher Fellowship will be awarded each year; One (1) The Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin Fellowship will be awarded each year; One (1) Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin Fellowship will be awarded each year; Four (4) JDC Archives Regional Fellowships will be granted in total over several years.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The Fred and Ellen Lewis Fellowship: The amount granted will range from $2,000 to $5,000 per fellow.

The Ruth and David Musher Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500 per fellow per year. 

The Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500

The Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500.

The JDC Archives Regional Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Fellowships will be awarded to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study.

The complete application is due by January 15, 2018.
