Grants to British Columbia professional artists and collectives and arts and cultural organizations to present diverse cultural performances in public settings. New applicants must complete the online registration prior to applying. Funding may be used for performance development and creation, or for production and realization.

Project Assistance: Professional Theatre is intended to support initiatives in the development, creation, production, realization and/or live performance of classical, experimental, original, traditional and contemporary theatre forms from all world cultures.

Individual professional artists and professional performing arts organizations, including collectives, are eligible to apply under the following categories:

  • Development and Creation: supports the initial stages of the creative process. Individuals, collectives and organizations can apply to develop and make new creative works. Grants provide support for creative research, creation and project development.
  • Production and Realization: supports further stage project development, production, remounts, post-production and presentation. Individuals, collectives and organizations can apply to create projects intended for presentation.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible, you must:
-Be based in British Columbia and conduct ongoing public programming activity in B.C.
-Compensate artists and arts professionals fairly in keeping with community contexts and industry standards within the field of practice, including adhering to international intellectual property rights standards and cultural ownership protocols.
-Have submitted all required final reports on previous BC Arts Council grants as of the deadline date for this program.

Under normal circumstances, applicants must, in addition to meeting the eligibility criteria, demonstrate a record of realizing comparable projects at a professional standard.

Arts and Cultural Organizations
An Arts and Cultural organization must:
-Be a professional organization registered and in good standing as a non-profit society in the Province of British Columbia for at least one year.
-Not currently receive Operating Assistance from the BC Arts Council.
-Have operated and offered public programming for a minimum of one year as a non-profit society.

Professional Arts or Curatorial Collectives
A professional collective or group must:
-Consist of a group of three or more arts professionals who are professionally active in their relevant artistic practice.
-Each member of the professional, independent collective must have a minimum of two years of professional practice in their field, following basic training, and must have a demonstrated body of previous work as an individual practitioner, and may not be a fulltime student.
-Each member of the professional, independent collective must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, readily identified as a professional British Columbia artist, and have lived in British Columbia for at least twelve months immediately prior to application.

Professional Independent Artists
A professional independent artist must:
-Have worked in their discipline as a professional practitioner for at least two years following completion of basic studies and have a demonstrated body of previous work and may not be a fulltime student.
-Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, readily identified as a professional British Columbia artist, and have lived in British Columbia for at least twelve months immediately prior to application.

Pre-Application Information:

-COVID-19 Update

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the spring intake for this program has been delayed and will launch in early April, with an extended deadline of May 30.

Please note: The Foundation is placing a temporary blackout period on new applications for activities that involve travel and/or in-person gatherings taking place between March 26 and June 30. This date could be adjusted if the current provincial and federal orders and directives in place are extended.

-All applicants are encouraged to register well before an application deadline (registration requests can take up to 4 business days to approve).

-All applicants, especially those who are new to the program, are urged to discuss their request with the program officer.

-Application Deadline: May 30, 2020.

-In response to these extraordinary circumstances, the jury will consider proposals that support
activities that start anytime after the date the application is submitted to the online system (rather
than the program deadline).

-All applicants will be notified of the results of the adjudication by 16 weeks post-deadline date.
