Grants to Durham County, North Carolina local non-profit organizations providing quality services necessary to promote a healthy, safe, and vibrant community. Interested applicants must submit a pre-application questionnaire by December 31 for consideration. A grant application workshop will be held on January 20.

Durham County is committed to providing financial assistance to those non-profit agencies that assist Durham County Government in carrying out its mission “to provide fiscally responsible, quality services necessary to promote a healthy, safe and vibrant community.” Non-profit agencies are also asked to focus on one or more of Durham County's Strategic Plan Goals and Objectives:

1) Community and Family Prosperity and Enrichment
-Provide support for educational opportunities that ensure high academic achievement
-Facilitate the development of a skilled workforce aligned with current and future business needs
-Foster a business-friendly environment and leverage local and regional economic development resources
-Expand access to technology
-Enhance cultural and creative opportunities

2) Health and Well-being for All
-Decrease health disparities within the community
-Strengthen the well-being of individuals and families through prevention and education
-Partner with community resources to increase access to health and wellness services

3) Safe and Secure Community
-Improve outcomes for vulnerable children, youth, adults and animals
-Improve outcomes for disconnected youth
-Improve coordination within public safety and criminal justice system
-Increase resident engagement in communities
-Enhance capacity to respond to emergencies

4) Environmental Stewardship
-Increase energy efficiency
-Increase use of environmentally preferred transportation options
-Improve water quality
-Change behaviors to achieve environmental quality
-Protect open space and preserve rural character

5) Accountable, Efficient and Visionary Government
-Strengthen leadership through collaboration
-Provide exceptional customer service
-Encourage innovation
-Harness community resources, expertise and intellectual capacity
-Foster informed public engagement
-Adopt evidence-based practices for programs

Term of Contract:

The grant period for non-profits approved for funding for Fiscal Year 2015-2016 will be from July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Requirements:

-All non-profits shall verify their n on-profit status by submitting an IRS tax exempt letter confirming 501(c)(3) status and a current solicitation license from the North Carolina Secretary of State (or if exempt, the exemption letter).

-A non-profit agency must have operated for two years by December 31 of the year preceding the application deadline.

-Non-profit agencies may not use a funding agent or other third party arrangement to meet program requirements for eligibility.

Restrictions:

-Only one application per agency will be considered each year.

-Grants are only for programmatic expenses (items recognized under Generally Accepted Accounting Practices – GAAP – as operating costs).

-The County will not fund the purchase, maintenance, or repair of capital assets with a value in excess of $5,000 or a useful life greater than three years.

There will be a non-profit application workshop on Tuesday, January 20, 2015, from 9:00 - 11:30 AM in the Commissioners Chambers.

All Durham community non-profits interested in applying for FY 2015-2016 non-profit funding MUST first submit a Pre-Application Questionnaire, IRS 501(c)3 determination letter and North Carolina charitable solicitation license no later than midnight EST on Wednesday, December 31, 2014.

Please email your pre-application and any appropriate attachments to the following address: bmsnonprofitapp@dconc.gov.

Submit a copy of your IRS tax-exempt letter and NC Solicitation License (or Letter of Exemption) via mail or email to the address below. If you have your IRS letter or solicitation license in electronic format, please feel free to e-mail them along with your pre-application.

All agencies that submit their pre-application questionnaire, IRS determination letter and solicitation license by the deadline will be contacted no later than January 9, 2015 as to their eligibility status.

The actual FY 2016 application will be available in e-Cimpact starting January 13, 2015. The deadline for submitting the application is by midnight EST on Sunday, March 1, 2015.
