Grant Description
Grants of up to $50,000 to New York nonprofit organizations for programs that benefit the community in eligible counties. Applicants must submit a letter of intent before applying. Funding is intended for activities within the focus areas of education; economic mobility; environmental protection; racial equity; and arts and culture. Grants are available to support general operations or programming. Applicants must be located or delivering services in at least one of the eight counties of Western New York: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming.

The Community Foundation’s competitive grants will align with one or more of the four following Community Goals:

  • Achieve racial/ethnic equity. 
  • Promote economic mobility through educational achievement for residents in low-income households
  • Steward significant environmental resources in the context of climate resilience
  • Promote regional vibrancy through architecture, arts, and culture.

Special funding is available to support the following: Programs that serve the visual, speech, or hearing impaired. Special consideration will be given to requests that fit a Solution AND advance the racial equity work of the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Taskforce.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Grants are awarded only to organizations that have current Section 501(c)(3) status as determined by the Internal Revenue Service.

Applicants must be located or delivering services in at least one of the eight counties of Western New York: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming.

If an organization wishes to submit a request for general operations support, it must have had at least one grant funded through a competitive process at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo during the past five years.


Pre-Application Information
The Community Foundation competitive process has two stages. The first step is the completion of an online Letter of Intent (LOI).

Timeline:
- LOI available online: January 1, 2024
- LOI due: February 5, 2024, by 4 p.m. No exceptions
- Selected organizations invited by email to submit full applications: March 25, 2024
- Application due: April 26, 2024, by 4 p.m. No exceptions
- Decision notification: Late June 2024.

Any organization may submit up to two LOIs. Eligible organizations can receive only one competitive grant per year.

If a non-profit received a 2023 Community Foundation competitive grant from this process, they will not be eligible to apply to the 2024 cycle.

Number of Grants
Only approximately 40-45 organizations will be invited to submit a full application. The Community Foundation makes about 30 to 35 grants through this process each year.

Estimated Size of Grant
The historical average for a competitive grant through this process is in the $18,000 to $20,000 range.

Programs that serve the visual, speech, or hearing impaired: ~$5,000

Term of Contract
The Foundation will offer the opportunity for multi-year support with consecutive year support contingent upon prior year outcomes. Please call to discuss multi-year requests before submitting an LOI.

The Foundation requires that all grants be closed out within one year of the receipt of funds, with the exception of multi-year awards.
