Grants to Monterey County, California nonprofit organizations to support food, shelter, and housing assistance programs. Funding is intended for expenses such as food purchases, facility enhancement, program-related transportation, and funds for rent or mortgage assistance. This year, the Local Board requests that applying agencies leverage partnerships, funding, and prevention solutions to complement the immediate relief provided by emergency food and shelter grants.

Eligible Expenses and Program Strategies:

  • Food Purchases (food banks, pantries etc)
  • Transportation for food banks/pantries
  • Equipment and Consumable Supplies
  • Transportation for Mass Shelter/Mass Feeding
  • Building Code Repairs
  • Utility Assistance
  • Facility Improvements (ADA)
  • Mass Shelter Expenses
  • Mass Feeding Expenses
  • Rent/Mortgage Assistance

Local Boards set funding priorities based on eligible program costs annually prior to the selection of agencies for funding. Local Boards must look at the resources available in the community, the emergency food and shelter needs of the community, gaps in services in the community and focus the dollars to address these needs in the areas of emergency food and shelter.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for consideration for funding under the Emergency Food & Shelter Program, an applicant agency must:
-Be a tax-exempt nonprofit organization;
-Have an accounting system;
-Practice nondiscrimination;
-Have demonstrated the capacity to deliver Emergency Food and/or Shelter Programs and/or Shelter;
-Have a voluntary Board of Directors (if a private organization).

Applicant organizations will be requested to provide proof of their status with respect to the above.

Grant funding can be used to reimburse expenses incurred prior to receiving funding/
