Awards to Alberta, Canada PreK-12 teachers and principals who have made a difference to student learning and to honor creative, innovative and effective teaching. Nominations are accepted for teachers and administrators who empower students by inspiring them to be engaged thinkers who are ethical citizens with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Eligible nominees all receive a certificate of recognition. Semi-finalists, who are not named award recipients, receive a certificate and access to $1,500 for professional learning. Award recipients receive a certificate, commemorative pin and access to $4,000 for professional learning. Each award recipient’s school receives a monetary award and certificate.
Each year, 20 Award recipients are honored at a special dinner and ceremony in May. All semifinalists are honored at regional celebration dinners in April.

Semi-finalists - $1,500 towards professional learning. Finalists - $4,000.
Parents, students, teacher colleagues, principals, superintendents and members of the public can nominate a teacher or a principal.
Nominees must, at the time of nomination:
-Hold a permanent Alberta teaching certificate,
-Teach or support the teaching of programs of study and education programs authorized by the School Act, and
-Work directly with students in a school setting on a daily basis (may be a principal or other certificated staff member).
-Only one nomination per certificated teacher is accepted.
-Posthumous nominations are not eligible.
-Semi-finalists are not eligible for the next three years.
-Previous Provincial Excellence in Teaching Award recipients or SMART Technologies Innovative Use of Technology Award recipients are not eligible.
-Teachers must be nominated individually; teacher teams are not eligible.
Three letters of support must accompany a nomination:
-One from a principal, or superintendent if the nominee is a principal;
-One from a teacher colleague; and
-One from a student, parent or member of the public who has never held a teaching certificate.
