Grant Description
Award of $5,000 to a USA, Canada, or International individual or team to recognize environmentally friendly chemistry innovation. Consideration will be given to discoveries that lead the way for sustainable manufacturing processes or products at a cost less than or comparable to that of current technologies, or discoveries that deliver new applications with compelling cost/benefit profiles.

Priority may be given to nominees that represent organizations in a position to directly commercialize, or organizations that can participate in commercialization through technology transfer (i.e., academic institutions that have technology licensing programs).

Affordability and practicality of a qualified application are evidenced by discoveries that:

  • Conform to existing manufacturing infrastructures with little or no additional investment in equipment or personnel to operate the manufacturing process,
  • Or are totally new products whose economics are compelling even after considering market prices for currently available alternatives, costs of starting materials, manufacturing yield and throughput, manufacturing labor, and equipment and facilities costs.

Nominee eligibility is neither contingent on the timeframe in which the technology was developed, nor on demonstrated commercial success. Discoveries must have significant commercial potential, however, to be considered for award.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Nominees may include:
- Individuals
- Research teams (maximum 3 individuals)
- Representatives from an organization (company, university, or national lab)
- Professors or other academic-based teams whose work has been commercialized

The award will be granted regardless of race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, presence of disabilities, and educational background.

ACS Eligibility:

- Nominators are not required to be members of the Society.
- A nomination can only have one nominator and the recommendation letter is written by this person.
- Any individual, except a member of the award selection committee or an ACS Board member during their terms of service on the Board, may submit either one nomination or one support letter for each award. However, selection committee members may submit other nominations or support letters for awards in which they are not serving as a judge.

- Nominees are not required to be members of the Society. Unless the submission is for the ACS Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Inorganic Chemistry, the Kathryn C. Hach Award for Entrepreneurial Success, the Charles Lathrop Parsons Award, the Award for Volunteer Service to the ACS or the ACS Award for Team Innovation (which requires at least one ACS member in good standing).
- The nominee’s accomplishments should be specific to the purpose of the award.
- In general, a recipient of a widely recognized scientific award is not eligible for an ACS national award unless the accomplishment cited as the basis for the nomination represents new or different work.
- An individual who has received an ACS National Award may be nominated for a different ACS award if (1) the nomination is for clearly different work from the previous award (the letter of recommendation for the award must address the differences between the work performed for the previous ACS award and that which is addressed in the current nomination) or (2) at least five years has elapsed since the previous ACS award was received. The “five-year” rule is waived for the preceptor(s) of the students who are eligible to receive the Nobel Laureate Signature Award for Graduate Education in Chemistry.

Pre-Application Information
Deadline: November 1 (annual review)

1. July 1 – November 1 each year is the open period for nominations. Completed nominations are submitted online.
2. From February through July of the following year, the Award Selection Committees review all the nominations.
3. The ACS President will contact all recipients to inform the nominees that he or she has been named the recipient of the Award. An official letter of congratulations will be mailed to each recipient.
4. The recipients are announced in the Chemical and Engineering News (C&EN) during the week of the fall National Meeting.
5. Each recipient is required to deliver an address on the scientific work that is being recognized by the Award during the spring National Meeting. The presentation will be given in a designated division or a division appropriate for the Award depending on the eligibility requirements of the Award. See ACS Technical Divisions for a complete listing of Technical Divisions.
6. The Award will be presented to the recipient at the spring National Meeting during the National Awards Program Ceremony and General Meeting of the Society. The Arthur C. Cope Scholar Awards will be presented during the fall National Meeting.

Nominations remain in the database for three award cycles. If the nominee is not named the recipient, the nominations will automatically rollover to the next award cycle. ACS does encourage nominators to access the nomination during the award cycle nomination open period July 1-November 1 of each year to update the nomination.
