Grant Description

Previous Page Version

Grants of up to $1,000 to USA, Canada, and international nonprofit organizations, schools, and groups for a wide variety of public garden projects. Funding is intended for food garden projects that serve community members in need. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, senior gardens, school gardens, community gardens, and many others.

Each year, SeedMoney offers grants to food garden projects through a 30-day crowdfunding challenge running from Nov 15 to Dec 15. SeedMoney offers grants on a sliding scale. The size of a grant a project can receive depends on how much it is able to raise over the 30-day period compared to other projects participating in the challenge.

There are three types of grants:

  • Strong Start Grants: For those projects that have raised the most after the 1st week of the 30-day challenge period. These can ben combined with Challenge Grants.
  • Geographic Interest Grants: For projects based in Maine or developing countries. No crowdfunding challenge is required.
  • Challenge Grants: For projects based on where they are ranked at the end of the 30-day challenge period.

SeedMoney's crowdfunding tools and grants are available to a wide variety of food garden projects including but not limited to school gardens, community gardens, food pantry gardens, homeless shelter gardens, job training gardens, tribal gardens, senior gardens, library gardens, college gardens, orphanage gardens, demonstration gardens, healing and therapeutic gardens, as well as hybrid versions of the projects above that defy easy categorization (i.e. a community garden project involving seniors who are growing extra food for their local food pantry). Although the garden projects are very diverse, they all share a few common denominators: they must be food gardens, they must be public gardens, and they must be proposed by nonprofit causes that are able to prove their nonprofit status.

To qualify for using the SeedMoney platform, applicant groups attest that they are raising funds for nonprofit, food garden projects serving people in need in their community. SeedMoney leaves it up to the applicant groups to decide how the money will be spent. For some groups, funds will be used to cover the annual operating costs of the garden project (e.g. buying seeds, supplies, tools, compost, etc.) whereas for others funds may be sought for a specific purpose like installing an irrigation system, purchasing a greenhouse, etc.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The grants are open to all types of public food garden projects (youth gardens, community gardens, food bank gardens, etc.) regardless of its location.

Projects must be proposed by nonprofit causes that are able to prove their nonprofit status. Nonprofit causes include a broad range of groups and aren’t limited just to 501c3 organizations. Past grantees include schools, churches, homeless shelters, food pantries, and many other groups looking to start or sustain a food garden project.

Projects that received grants last year and in previous years are eligible to apply again this year.

The funders stipulate that their funds can’t be awarded to individuals (even generous ones!) so these wishes must be respected.

Pre-Application Information:

Timeline:

- November 12: Applications due until 11:59 PM. Applications that have been successfully submitted via the website by this time will only be considered.
- November 15 - Challenge begins. At noon Eastern Time on November 15th, all funding campaigns whose applications were submitted on time and fit the criteria will go live. Let your project’s supporters know in advance.
- December 15 - At noon Eastern Time on December 15th, the 30-day challenge period ends. Your campaign will be able to keep whatever it has raised even if it hasn’t managed to reach its funding goal.

Each applicant can only create one campaign.

Campaigns that don’t reach their funding target will still receive whatever funds have been donated to them.

Whatever funds your project manages to raise will be sent to you in US dollars. Projects located outside the United States must either have a PayPal address or a website where online donations can be made
