Grant Description
Grants to Ontario qualified donees including government agencies, universities, and athletic associations for programs that address general community needs. Funding is intended for activities in the areas of community services, health and wellness, social welfare, arts and culture, environment, and animal welfare, and for projects that benefit youth and families. Projects must primarily benefit the people in the catchment area of the Foundation, in Kenora and Lake of Woods Region.

The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation considers grants for charitable organizations that fall into the following categories:

  • General Needs of the Community
  • Health & Wellness
  • Social Welfare
  • Arts & Culture
  • Environment
  • Animal Welfare

Grants made from the Moffat Family Fund will consider the provision of services for:

  • Youth
  • Families

Preference is given to projects which:

  • Encourage more efficient use of community resources;
  • Demonstrate innovative approaches and techniques to solve community issues, and build individual, neighborhood and/or community capacity;
  • Address the root causes of issues in the community;
  • Promote cooperation and sharing among organizations, eliminating duplication of services;
  • Promote volunteer participation;
  • Strengthen an organization's capacity to be sustainable.

Organizations must demonstrate a strong and committed board, fiscal responsibility and effective management. An operating budget must be submitted.

Applicants must establish that there is a need for the project and clearly demonstrate the impact that project will make at a community level. 

Grants are awarded for specific purposes. Pilot or demonstration projects must include provisions for evaluation and a realistic plan for fiscal financial viability beyond the pilot stage.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
To apply for a grant from the Kenora & Lake of the Woods Community Foundation, you must be a qualified donee as per the Canada Revenue Agency. Below is a list of qualified donees:
- A registered charity (including a registered national arts service organization);
- A registered Canadian amateur athletic association;
- A registered housing corporation resident in Canada constituted exclusively to provide low-cost housing for the aged;
- A registered Canadian municipality;
- A registered municipal or public body performing a function of government in Canada;
- A registered university outside Canada that is prescribed to be a university, the student body of which ordinarily includes students from Canada;
- A registered charitable organization outside Canada to which Her Majesty in right of Canada has made a gift;
- Her Majesty in right of Canada, a province, or a territory; and
- The United Nations and its agencies.

Non-profit organizations that do not have a charitable registration number, but would like to apply for a grant, can do so through a “sponsor” registered charity. Please refer to "Confirmation of a Written Agreement between a Registered Charity and a Non-profit organization".

Ineligible
Grants are not made to projects/initiatives that primarily support:
- Support operating expenses of established agencies or programs
- Governments
- Individuals
- Annual fund drives
- Reduction of mortgages or other debt
- Projects already completed at the time of granting
- Political activities
- Direct religious activities

Pre-Application Information
Deadlines:
There are two deadlines each year for grant application to the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation:

- March 6 - Moffat Family Fund applications, supporting projects for youth and families
- September - Community Funds applications, supporting projects for the general needs of the community

Please Note: Dream Fund Applications are not being accepted at this time.

All applications must be submitted online, through the website portal.

Organizations are eligible to apply for funding once per calendar year.

Term of Contract
Grants are awarded for projects covering a definite period of typically one year or less.
